Tribes Ascend, TF2, and Quake Live are all good online shooters. Nitronic Rush is a very fast paced racing game. DC Universe Online is an MMO where you're a super hero. I haven't gotten too far, but I think it's worth downloading just to be a superhero :P.
Anyone that's a fan of RPGs should try out Ultima 5: Lazarus. It's a free remake of the original using the Dungeon Siege engine, and it's well made with a incredibly immersive soundtrack, charming characters, and a great story.
You'll also have to add the The Graphic Enhancement for better graphics and the Lazarus font mod (scroll a bit down to find it) for much more readable dialogues. You could also add the Lazarus camera for better view distance and improved camera.
You can also try Ultima IV: Reborn which is a remake of the original using the Neverwinter Nights engine.

I've been playing quite a bit of LoL lately, and would recommend that for anyone looking for a team based competitive game. I used to play LOTRO, but I could never really get into the whole middle earth setting. If you are looking for a f2p mmo, i've been playing one called remnant knights. Its more anime type graphics, but the gms and community are pretty active. If you are looking for an FPS, TF2 and Wolfenstein are both really solid. I haven't played tribes ascend, but if it is anything like the older games I'm gonna have to give it a shot, i do love jetpacking around shooting exploding discs at people.
