They aren't really any good free mmo's besides Anarchy Online at least imo, and its nothing like WoW.

Try the MUD games (many are offered to play for free). MUDS have no visuals - text based - but you won't find a richer world with more items to fight/cast with. Also, you'll have a lot of fun scripting for a big fight. Apart from AFK scripts and obvious cheats, knock yourself out. :)

Just be wary of MUDs that allow buying credits with real money for ingame items and little control of PvP combat and thieving. Read their gameplay rules very carefully. Some of these MUDs literally can steal your money and even condone highway robbery (bought XYZ items to cast whatever spell, lose your connection, lose whatever you had in the hand - which could be $20 in real money for each "lost" connection. A thief could steal your $800 real world money sword, too).

Guild Wars is pretty good and all you have to pay for is £20/30 for the game then no monthly sub needed, its not really a fully fledged mmorpg but still good value considering. If you want totally free then try PlaneShift Crystal Blue also i there's a good list on the Tweak Guides forum of online games: http://forums.tweakguides.com/showthread.php?t=2927
