The sad truth is forget free for an MMO of the kind you would like.
Also, skip SWG for something paid, simply see the forums here or even on thier own official ones probably for good reasons to do so. I won't bother here. It's all been said at great length. The game devolved into total disaster by most accounts. Even those who like it as it stands today can hardly deny there are few players to play with. The only way to ressurect that licence now would be a complete shut down and new effort from scratch, preferably not published by SOE, etc.
Since you like a space oriented MMO I would say pony up for Eve. I don't think you'd be sorry. It is widely regarded as the best of its kind by quite a large margin. All reports from its fans would indicate it is well worth the 15 bucks a month. However, I believe you can see for yourself with a free trial. Google for that and check it out.
15 bucks a month is cheap money for 24/7 entertainment excellence whenever you want to play. Sadly, there is only a handful of MMO's that arguably come anywhere close to that description and not a single one of them is free. End of story.
