...but what should I ask for?  Any ideas?  I guess most games are out, since they're going to be region coded, but what else?  They have some high end stuff over there for dirt cheap, so it's a really good opportunity.  I just don't know what I should ask her to look for.  Your thoughts?

About 15 years ago when my dad went to China he had a hard time getting any sort of electronics back home. He did get me some gameboy games though. Portable games are not region encoded and neither are PS3 games!

I wouldn't get anything big, just because you won't be getting support for the electronics most likely if problems come up. Computer hardware from the usual brands won't be that much cheaper than here. The question is whether there's anything you actually need or could use. If I were going to China, I'd just pick up a usb hub and a bluetooth adapter, something small and where quality isn't a really important issue.

Those gameboy games wouldn't be region coded anyway, as they're all knockoffs You're not going to find any technology in China cheaper than it is here, and anything chinese exclusive is going to be absolute crap Are they going to China, or to Hong Kong? When it comes to movies/technology/games they're 2 different markets

Dude, Why do you have to bust on everybody. Portable games have never been region encoded! We all know you hate China already. Lay off!

As a side note, since China is growing so fast, I want to see his reaction when China becomes more powerful than the US one day.

No, I don't hate China. If you look at readily available figures, you'll see that well over 90% of the media sold in China is a knockoff and/or bootleg. Gameboy wasn't even launched there until 2005.

As a side note, since China is growing so fast, I want to see his reaction when China becomes more powerful than the US one day.

What does that have to do with anything? These are the facts today Chinese designed and manufactured electronics are crap Japan and Korea both took upwards of 30 years to start making homegrown, non-crap electronics. Therefore, China is at best likely to be at least 20 before they have homegrown, non-crap electronics. The workers in China are starting to demand decent pay and rights, so it's also likely that the multinationals will abandon them at some point in the near future and go after the next country to exploit, and the cycle starts anew.

None.

If you buy something cheap in Hong Kong it's a cheap imitation, definitely not OEM.

Ever hit up the streets of *insert city here* and bought cheap Rolex's or Oakley's? Same deal in Hong Kong.

They don't offer killer deals because they have distributor hookups, they offer killer deals because they're not selling "the real deal."

Hong Kong is a hive for piracy.

kodai is somewhat right actually. i went to thailand and when i went to buy some games, almost all of them were pirated. even the real copies of games had pirated copies next to them.  i actually bought  metal gear  for gameboy advance. i'm guessing it was somekind of illegal port from the NES version because im pretty sure no metal gear games came out on gameboy. thats the only game i bought though, everything else was region coded.

That's all well and good but my games weren't Knock-offs. They had the Nintendo seal and everything. Not everything in China is pirated. It just so happens that it is a booming black market there right now.

They likely just copied the lable. It doesn't "so happen", virtually all media sold on the asian continent is a booteg outside of Japan. In China it's 90%+. Some of the stuff on the surface looks completely authentic. They even have bootlegs in collector's editions now (ER, all aired seasons in a medical kit for example). Some of them include copyright notices of their own design, and even watermark video so that other bootleggers don't bootleg their bootleg

Metal Gear DID come out on the gameboy. So the products are crappy? Who cares if you can get an MP3 player for $20... if it breaks in year, big deal.

Because for another $20, you can get an MP3 player here that will last for years, and have better sound quality, much higher capacity and longer battery life?
