Future proofing

If I got a motherboard that has PCI-E 2.0 and DDR3 RAM how long would the motherboard last?

Not that I would use DDR3 RAM right now but just wondering.

well my understanding is next year Intel is releasing a new chipset...

Not in the sense for CPU but for Video cards and RAM

But what is that about chipsets? So should I wait til next year to get a computer? If I want it futureproofed?

New GPUs come out this month, new CPU next year, ram has DDR3 out now, motherboards all supporting quad SLI, PCI-E 2.0, 15,000 RPM Hard drives.

Future proofing probably will cost your more than just upgrading every year.

I get the point but just something that will last a couple or few years. So when would a PCI-E and DDR2 start lagging me to death? 2 years?

There is no such thing as future-proofing. Either buy things when they are at your price/value point or buy a console. You will never be ahead of the technology game.

PCI-E will be good for at least another 1-2 years, as NO card out right now has used the full band-width of even PCI-E 1.0, PCI-E 2.0 is a gimmick. I am pretty sure the 9800 GX2 doesn't even use the full PCI-E 1.0 band-width.

Ram will not make or break a system, get the best DDR2 you can get right now, 4 gigs of it and you're set for 1.5 years or longer if you don't really care.

Ok thanks alot yea, 2 years I'm off to university so, value prices on computers now will certainly last me for the time I need it for. As then I would need to buy a laptop and I'm not stuck with old technology anyways.nightwraith40k

Wait for the new cards to come out from Nvidia, buy one or two of them and you win for a year or two, run highest settings for at least 8+ months.
