Hey guys.....

on these forums, the only 2 engines that really get thrashed around are the Cryengine 2 and the Unreal Engine........they are both brilliant engines...ala crysis & UT 3........

But I thought it would be interesting to find out the names of other engines that are also top notch, but dont get a lot of cred......

There is the Chrome2 engine by techland for me.....it looks absolutely fantastic IMO...just check out the trailers for Warhound at Gametrailers to see what I mean....

What other rngines do ya'll know about????

The source engine for Half-Life 2. I think it's source???? Anyway, a little dated and nowhere near as pretty as unreal 3, but it looks awesome on high and will scale extremely well, it runs on lower systems which other engines don't.

I believe Source is one of the most praised engines ever.

I'd say SAGE Engine. It's the engine used in Tiberium Wars, Generals and Battle for Middle-Earth. It dates all the way back to Emperor: Battle for Dune. It still works and looks good and scales well on older PC's.

Bah! You people are always talking about first person engines. What about "Baldur's Gate"?!

The "Infinity Engine" offers a pre-rendered isometric worldview, with sprite-based characters. Baldur's Gate was also the third computer game ever to make use of the "Lua" scripting language.8)

Actually, the UE3 gets more credit than what its worth. The thing forces no MSAA... and we are in a time where MSAA is a thing that should be put into every game.

I think one engine that doesn't get near enough credit, at least for its lighting, is the Doom 3 engine. It was incredibly far ahead of its time in terms of lighting. Everything was rendered in real time, nothing was "cheated." So many people complained about things being too dark and most of the time failed to realise that there was a method to id's madness and that was to show off all the work they put into programming those spectacular lighting calculations into their engine.

The CryEngine2 is the epitome of technological advancement. Nothing we have access to right now is equivalent to Crytek's amazing work. They put so much effort into that thing and still pulled a spectacular game out to go along with it. Seeing what the mod community does with the engine is going to be fantastic. My guess is that it will be the new "Source."

I agree with foxhound, Doom3 didn't got enought credit. Today I can run Doom3 at medium-level on my notebook while I'm not able to run (except at ~3 fps) Stalker at very-low setting.

Cryengine 2 doesnt get enough attention at all. Unreal engine 3 seems to be made so it could fit both console and pc, but the cryengine 2 was totally designed for the PC. Because of this, that engine will be ignored for now. Maybe with the next generation consoles would be powerful enough to use cryengine 2.

Maybe because companies find U3 engine more suitable... Games using U3 are much more then Cry2 (just 2 if I recall correctly), so companies are pushed to use U3 in some manner...

I don't know... is ubi using Cry2 engine for FC2? Or a modified version one? If no, it will not bring light to Crytek engines, so Crysis will be the only one...

the original cry engine didn't recieve much praise, although it was the best at the time (overshadowed by Doom3 I think)

The Xray(I think thats the engine)engine in Stalker. Some amazing affects in it, would love to see it updated to dx10.

Also the Essence Engine, from Company of Heroes. IMO one of the best RTS engines out there. Or the Masstech engine in World in Conflict.

I think the reason Cryengine 2 (and far cry 2's engine, which I think is just a modified Cryengine.) is only going to be for pc is because it takes advantage of multi-core proccessors, even though 360 has 3 signle cores, it can't take advantage of Cryengine 2 because those proccessors are only single cores.

Anyone know what engine that game "Alan Wake" is gonna be on? It looks fantastic! I saw a tech demo for it at some crappy video resolution, and it still looked good. The "Weather" in that game looks great.

The engine they used in "The Chronicles of Riddick:Escape from Butchers Bay". It came out months earlier than Doom3, and was already using normal mapping. It even had soft shadows which even Doom3 and Quake 4 didnt have. Full implementation of soft shadows was not seen again until FEAR i think.

Also "Project Offset" seems to have a awesome looking engine. But its a unreleased game and there hasnt been any update at the official site in a long time. "Sigh" :(

I played Crysis demo and it wasn't run so much slower then Stalker. OK Xray looks great on good PC but scalability is very important. See Valve for instance, lots games uses their engine..

I think Alan Wake is built on a "ground-up" engine.

Whoa, then I'm getting Jagged Alliance.

There was just something I wasn't expecting when I played the Silent Storm demo. The way I was able to blow holes in walls and ceilings to get at enemies. The way I was able to shoot myself a ladder to climb to a higher level. Everything just seemed so different because at the end, you realize that not one game out there allowed you to do everything that SS allowed.
