I always see people complaining about how Bioshock was a big let down because it was over hyped. A lot of people seem really annoyed that Bioshock didn't live up to the hype about being System Shock 2's predecessor.I've never played SS2, but after reading up about it and then reading up about what Bioshock was going to be like, I don't see how anyone figured Bioshock was going to be the SS2.

Why doyou follow the hype? You're almost always going to be let down and then you'll be made you spent the money on that game.

Like in school when I took tests, I was one of that kids that never had to study to do good....after the test, I always felt I did a good job and figured I at least got a B.When thetest came back the next day and I was graded anA, I was happy. I never once expected to get an A because it's not fun being let down when you hype yourself up so much.

Who is following all the hype for Crysis and is ready to be let downwhen the game isn't as good as you've built it up to be?

Why do people do this?

I don't follow the hype. Bioshock was good game but you could tell it was dumbed down for the consoles. As for Crysis it could have Far Cry's graphics for all I care, as long as it has the fully destructible environments.

I don't follow much hype. When I read a lot of people talking about a certain game, I look it up, watch some videos, and download demo if available. Hype can't be trusted.

This morning was Hellgate's turn to become a let down. That demo was one of the worst things I've ever played. In fact, I think is the worst demo ever made. I'm waiting for the game to come out, beacuse I won't buy it until I read a lot of player reviews.

I've played the beta, and I can honestly say that Hellgate London is a pheonominal game. The demo is a terrible representation of it, it feels like playing an alpha version or something.

As for hype - it all depends on how good a game is marketed. Bioshock was extremely well marketed as 'the shooter 2.0' and such, everyone wants to believe that a game is going to come along and make you happy / be absoloutley perfect e.t.c.

So it depends how much you believe it I suppose, I really like hype - it adds to the whole experiance of gaming in general.

I dont hype games anymore unless I have played a demo and absolutely loved it.

My new habbit is to destroy hype in SW for games that havent been played and fanboys hype to death as the next AAA game for this console or another... :) yeah doing that is why im still on SW.

I try not to let it suck me in. Especially subpar games like Halo 3. WAAAAY too much hype. The bad thing about hype is that once some people get it in their head that a game is great...even if the game sux when it comes out they will still argue with you that it is great. I agree with the post up above. Hellgate was the worst demo I may have ever played. But those who let it hype them up will refuse to let themselves believe in reality that unless this game undergoes major tweaking it will fail MISERABLY. Ive even heard it feels diabloesque???? WHAT?!!? Talk about dillusional...its in a different universe all together. Comparing one of the greats to this game (so far) is insulting but thats what hype does. Thats why i TRY not to let it suck me in....i dont want to be one of the "dillusionals".

Hype is just a way to motivate yourself about the release of a game. Now, when people start hyping up about it's going to be the greatest game ever released, that's when you should just stop reading. I never like to get my hopes built up on something that I haven't even played, especially by another person's perspective on that said game.

So, I don't really listen to the hype when all it's going to do is let me down big time. But,I do hype games that I am looking forward to being released, but I won't go as far to say it's going to be one of the best, or even the greatest game ever released. Because, quite frankly, I don't know how it's going to be unless it is released. Demo's of today's games rarely do the final product justice. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it is a complete different feel then the final product all together, so I don't always base my opinion on a game from its demo release.

I follow my own internal hype. Sometimes this goes along with the "public" hype, sometimes it doesn't. Usually my level of expectations goes up and down based on previews I read here on Gamespot. I have learned to develop a sense for when a game is going to be a stinker or not. For the most part I don't find myself being disapointed that often.

I rarely follow the hype. I haven't seen much about Crysis, and I keep telling myself it would probably be like Far Cry (an ok game... In theory I should have liked it more than I did) I didn't know about Bioshock before it was released, and it still was a huge letdown It's much better to keep telling myself how bad a game will be, then you can only be pleasantly surprised when it gets released :D

Hyping is a part of the gaming experience; for example Crysis you can hype as much as you want that it will look good (we know it will); but i'n terms of gameplay we are left a bit in the dark; but I just try saying to myself "It's the guy's that made Far Cry, so it will be just fine"

Well, I do my best not to follow the hype. Tiberian Sun taught me that if you follow the hype, you will be disappointed. Bioshock was a refresher since I was expecting System Shock gameplay and a longer game. Here are some of my personal rules about not following hype:

1. If its multiplatform, dont hype it. PERIOD! Nothing good has ever come from a PC game series that has a sequal made for multiplatform.
2. If it is from a well-known studio, dont hype it. Individual game makers can be hyped, however (Peter Molyneux, Sid Maier, etc).
3. If it is extremely pretty, dont hype it
4. If it claims to have "revolutionary" something in it, dont hype it
5. Dont hype anything, if at all possible.

Number five is the real tricky one since its tough to not hype anything.

The game "journalism" industry is just as guilty as engineering hype as people are guilty of following it. If consumers weren't constantly bombarded with previews saying how "X game is going game is going to revolutionize the genre!" then the hype wouldn't get out of hand all of the time.

I don't follow the hype anymore. I just read tiny bits of previews, but not enough to get me so excited that the game can't possibly live up to what I want.

Hype can be fun.

Also, you seem to mistake over-hyped with hype in general. For instance, as you pointed out, Bioshock had INSANE hype around it. I was disappointed. However, Crysis has even more hype than Bioshock ever had, and after the Beta it's clear that Crysis will live up to the hype.

Or at least, that's the hype.

it's hard to NOT be hyped about the witcher. I've been hearing such great things and have seen great previews. If they manage to get it right, this game for me is RPG of the year.

Actually if you follow the Hype IMO you will usually end up with some dam good games. Crappy games usually don't recieve alot of hype, but good games can be hyped beyond thier merits. I for one am okay with that. At least when I purchase a over hyped game it usually is not a crappy game.

I don't read preveiws but it's hard to not get caught up in some form of hype. I can't get on a forum without somedissagreement about a game that directly relates to someones preconceived idea getting in the way. These ideas are formed from hype or as in Bioshocks case from comparisons to other games. All in all I think it's a part of the experiance as others have noted.
