Might be. External drives are meant for data and backup purposes, not for installing programs.

I think it should work fine. I dont know about heavy textures but I'm quite sure the bandwitch is enough on usb.

I would say yes, but have never tried, so your results may differ.

The speed of the bus may be your first problem, but probably not a show stopper. Thereal problem is thatif you have other USB devices, the hard drivewouldsuffer from device prioritization as it has to 'share' the bus bandwidth (actually a timing issue not data size)with the other devices.

Yes, as a USB is slower than being directly connected to the motherboard. If you are worried about having games where they can stay safe while you reformat, I would recommend repartitioning your main hard drive and making a logical drive for installing programs.

USB is quite a bit slower than SATA. It usually only affects load times unless the game loads on the fly, but even then its not that big a difference.

if you are planning on playing games on that then you are going to experiance extreamley reduced preformance. the USB simply cannot keep up.

If its a sata drive and the enclosure has an eSATA connection, use that. It's almost as good as hooking it up as an internal (for most good enclosures that is).

That said, USB isn't going to be ideal for load times :)

depends on your interface, e-sata is the fastest for external solution, but not many small external have an e-sata port
