I'm looking for a single player game with a really good story, that would suck me in and force me to go on and on. Any ideas?

Assassins Creed was quite good but I got tired of it already and I've hardly played any of the AC: Revelations.

Also, I'd like it to have some action, I'm not really a L.A. Noire kind of guy if you know what I mean.

Thanks in advance.

To The Moon. Best story in any game I've ever played, bar none. Takes storytelling to a whole new level.

Best story in games, Metal Gear Franchise IMO.

But thats not really a pc franchise.

So I will say recently games that had a good story on pc..

Bastion

Stalker

SWTOR

Mass Effect

Alpha Protocol (hidden gem)

Batman AA (I haven't had the pleasure of playing Batman AC yet, I am saving it for later next year)

Those are some that have pretty awesome stories.

Planescape: Torment and Knights of the Old Republic. Old-school story goodness. Then we have Neverwinter Nights 2, also a bit old. Newer ones: Mass Effect, The WItcher, Dragon Age (though poorly paced), Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Alpha Protocol. To start with. :)

GTA IV + expansions (even if it's a bad port, the story is really well done) and Batman (both of them)

I loved Bioshock 1's story. I played it on the 360 though so I'm not sure how good/bad the PC port was. I would think the controls should be better because there was like no aim assist for the 360 so m/kb may make it play better. :)

God of War, but that's only available on Playstation. So I'll go with Batman: Arkham series.

Mass effect and red dead redemption. The story causes u a feeling of awesomeness, like after watching a great film.

Also u can try Hl2, ep1,ep2.

Deus Ex, Bioshock, System Shock 2 are action games with a good story.

The RTS, Homeworld has an amazing story as well.

If it comes to indie games with good story - To the Moon & Bastion.

If it comes to bigger deved' games - Mass Effect franchise (it has sex !) , The Witcher franchise (it has sex too !) also has a decent story ... Gothic franchise also has a somewhat interesting story that develops through out the games though there aren't that many main quests to do there the side quests make much more than just "make up" for that lack of main quests... oh and has sex too ! :P

P.S. What's with the sex ... sheesh

EDIT: Oh you may add Risen and the upcoming Risen 2 too ... kinda :S

Homeworld has one of the best stories i've ever seen in a video game. World in Conflict also has a fantastic one.

Granted they are both rather short and to the point, not a lot of crazy character development or anything. Homeworld only hints on a lot of lore but doesn't really dive into it.

I say this with my flameshield on... but the OLDER Call of Dutys had a "decent" story. At least I liked them. But ever since MW2 the stories became more of a let's just throw 100s of enemies at you making it pretty unrealistic. But COD1 to mw1 had decent story lines that I liked. Bad Company 2 wasn't THAT bad, I enjoyed it. And so far BF3 isn't that bad.

IF you're into the whole sci-fi thing then def Mass Effect.. I loved the game but couldn't get into the whole futuristic setting.

Next game on my list since I too look for singleplayer games with good stories is Witcher 2.. haven't heard anything bad about it yet.

Best Story's for me...... all of which is obviously personal opinion. Baldur's Gate 1&2 PlaneScape: Tourment Fallout 2 Max Payne 1&2 FFVII Singularity ....Many more, but thats what came off the top of my head. Modern Games, lack really good single player story elements of the past. Assassins Creed (1), for one, had to have been the most repetitive, predictable, game ive played in the past 5+ years. VISUAL elements kept that game alive, nothing else (maybe a little bit of "explorability", but even that was lackluster).

You should get Cryostasis. It's cheap, and has a killer story line and atmosphere. You would probably really like it, if you can get beyond the gameplay mechanics sometimes lacking. I've been looking a great game with a great story. It was hard to find, but I decided to give Cryostasis a try and I can't quit playing it.

The first 3 Prince of Persia games. Second one is a bit weak compared to the other two, but the overall story is one of the best I've seen in a video game. If only the movie didn't suck so much =(

portal 2. half-life 2 + episodes have great storytelling, but the story isn't as strong as it could be. all 3 games still give you great immersion factor, though. being completely honest, i loved metro 2033's story. deus ex: HR's story was very good, too. slow, but the pacing of it makes sense and feels right as you go along.

Just about everyone in this thread has given my best picks. My favorite story in any game this generation is probably Red Dead Redemption, but sadly its not on PC (though definitely check it out if you are ok with a slow start). Here are my picks:

Portal series

Grand Theft Auto series (the earlier ones had fun gangster tales, but IV dropped the ball in amazing writing)

Bioshock (pretty much impossible to miss this one)

Half-Life series (the stories themselves aren't too shockingly new, but the presentation and writing goes a long way, plus apparently Quentin Tarantino loves the Half-Life series so take that to heart)

Mass Effect series (just play it, and you will see because I don't even want to spoil anything about this amazing series)

Max Payne series (the gameplay is a tad dated, but the series just drips with dark noir, and its a good way to get caught up before Max Payne 3)

Alpha Protocol (the story feels familiar, but the writing is top notch, and Obsidian definitely knows how to craft a good tale)

Fallout series (pretty much everyone of these games has a great tale I'd say, but the older ones are incredibly slow paced so you might want to start with 3 and New Vegas if you don't like turn based combat)

Deus Ex series (mainly Human Revolution and the first game, I've only tried a bit of the second so I wouldn't know about it too well)

Batman: Arkham Asylum/City (my avatar and quote made this something I HAD to include, but if you like comics or heroes even a tiny bit, then check these amazing games out)

Cryostasis has the best story I've ever experienced in a video game, period.
