Seriously, I hate it when people yell about how the graphics in a game are crap for nowadays. Well guess what no one really complained when Schindler's List was in black-and-white, now did they? I play games like Geneforge, Avernum, soon Diablo 2, and the gameplay in those games is PHENOMENAL. I've seen this argument before, and I find it utterly ridiculous. Anyone here play Minecraft? That game looks older than Diablo, but is one of the most innovative games I've ever played.

So, are you for graphics, or gameplay? Do the graphics influence whether you buy a product or not? For me, it's definitely gameplay, unless the graphics hinder the gameplay in any way.

Graphics should effectively relay visual information that is imperative to the player. Also, graphics are part of the immersion process, however gameplay is of course the most essential bit.

Graphics are important. Otherwise techology would stand still and pc gamers wouldn't constantly remind people how much better they are graphically than consoles... Minecraft might be great, but honestly I can't stand first gen 3d graphics, which it barely qualifies from what i've seen of it...

Good graphics are not needed to make an amazing game BUT they make games better.

True, but I'm spoiled, so a good game that looks like crap just wont cut it anymore.

i've been playing KOTOR lately since it was dirt cheap on steam, never played it before

and i heard great things about it.

turns out that i love the game! it feels so much like mass effect 2, but starwars.

i'm no fan of star wars saga, but the music in this game pulls me

in soo much that it overpowers the dated graphics. combat is great and

the characters are dynamic. this is surely a classic.

It depends on the type of game. I've found with a lot of FPS that the visuals need to compliment the game play. You need to have high levels of detailed to feel immersed in the situations you are in. Look at a game like Thief. The attention on the shadows is a irreplaceable part of the game play.

Depends on the genre to a certain extent (I probably wouldn't spend hours in the Sims 2 making houses if the graphics sucked, nor would I play Simcity 4 if it weren't for the beautiful custom buildings you can get)

It's also kinda that sentiment is still around. I used to be a big graphic person around 2003-2004, but that's because a lot of older 3d games were butt ugly because of really low polygon counts and blank textures. Back in Doom days I was frickin happy to be playing a computer game period!

I'm sure game companies love it, as it's fairly straightforward to attract "gamers" with newer and marginally improved graphics, if you look really really...really...close.

If a game has good - great gameplay, but terrible awful 8-bit or 16-bit 2D graphics or N64-like 3D models, then I don't buy it.

If a game has stunning visuals but terrible gameplay, then I don't buy it.

If a game has decent graphics and gameplay, then I buy it.

Balancing graphics and gameplay is what makes a game great. In this generation, neither of them can survive without each other (unless you are very tolerant).

Graphics sell on pre-release, game-play sells on post-release

I think we can all agree that gameplay is on the top of the list of what makes a great game. This has been asked countless times and the answer is the same every time.

Still, I think people too often downplay the importance of how good a game looks, and too many act as though great graphics and great gameplay are somehow mutually exclusive. Good visuals make games more immersive and help to suspend disbelief, which makes games a heck of a lot more fun.

Good graphics don't make a game immersive, quite the opposite in my opinion, i get immersed more in old games because the ''bad'' graphics leave more to the imagination.

Pretty much, yeah.

For example, i consider the greatest JRPG's ever made to be Xenogears; Chrono Trigger; Final Fantasy 6,7,8,9; Grandia.. And i'm playing them right now, and i mean DAMN are they good compared to later such as FF XII and the likes. Another example, Blazblue does not use 3D characters, and its a beautiful, fairly popular game. Basically most 2D fighting games are timeless.

Games such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid & Castlevania: Simphony of the night, and other side scrollers are timeless games, could be played by any generation and could be enjoyed.

And wen your playing these games right now, and having fun with them, there's basically no nostalgia involved. Their just timeless.

To me this is like saying a marriage without sex will work as long as you love each other. Yes gameplay is essential but you just have to back it up with decent graphics nowadays. Typically these days it is not an issue.

i dont 100% agree with that but mostly. the most immersive game i have played is deus ex. still is. the graphics, though really old, do play a part. but many devs really underestimate the importance of sound, the sound of a cold wind, of birds singing in the morning and evening (i cant remember the last game where i heard birds sing), a toilet flushing (very important this..not enough toilets in games imho :P). that can add more to immersion than any graphics. interactivity (if i can throw a ball around..even if its completly irrelevant to the rest of the game...then that further improves it. if it throw that ball at someone and they react then thats another boost for immersion). tight controls (if i have to think how i do something then immersion is gone) no loading screens (on newer computer DE1 loads do quickly that i barely notice. but on its release it was quite slow which was annoying). graphics play a role in immersion and shouldnt be disregarded...but i think way way too much importance is being put on graphics when talking about immersion. on topic...im playing mount and blade and loving it.....so guess where i stand on this topic :).

Gameplay, Graphic, and Storyline. I judge a games from these 3. But still it depends on the genre.

For example, rollercoaster tycoon, tropico 1, knight of honor, stronghold, etc. they are old games and the graphics aren't as good as now, but I still enjoy these game because the gameplay are fascinating!!

I agree, in my opinion sound a a big part of what makes a game immersive, much more than graphics, things like realistic gunsound and ambience, amd soundtrack etc game play > sound > storyline/setting >graphics

Gameplay, amazing graphics are not needed. Only basic ones are. Look at Morrowind, I've had the most fun and time spent on that game, yet without mods the graphics are crap.

A game may derive its style from great graphics. Granted, like you people say 100% of the freaking time, its GAMEPLAY > GRAPHICS. Please stop making these topics, it's getting old.

Too right - Thief is the best evidence that no matter how detailed the visual aspect is, it serves its best purpose in the gameplay.

I agree wholeheartedly with the argument that graphics need to either immerse the player, or provide imperative information for the player.

While I don't disagree with you about your view on graphics, your example of schindler's list is just plain stupid. The decision to go black and white was a stylistic choice, much like developers adopt cel shading for games. It isn't like Black and White is the nes and color is a PS3.

I find it kind of funny when people point to titles of the past as evidence that graphics don't matter. Many of those games had absolutely state of the art graphics at the time of their release, and Morrowind was certainly no exception. It doesn't completely discredit the argument, but it's kind of a funny thing to think about.

I almost find this an offensive statement because IMO Morrowind's art direction makes it one of the most beautiful games out there.

It depends on the game. FPS enjoyment increases when the graphics are pleasant to look at, but I can still overlook that problem. If graphics was more important to me than gameplay, I wouldn't have played KOTOR 5 years after it came out (and enjoyed it immensely) or I wouldn't be playing Deus Ex for the first time 9 years after it came out :)
