This year I am going to let my other half surprise me by getting me a game of my choosing. The reason of this post is naturally that I require help with choosing.

As of this moment I have narrowed it down to 6.

Fallout 3 Collection (liked FO:tactics, but it's a FPS, which I usually don't enjoy)
Sengoku (too much like CK? and CK2 is coming out next year)
Dragon Age:Origins - Ultimate Edition (loved Baldur's Gate, not sure this is the same)
Fallout: New Vegas (read that this is not a sandbox game as FO:3)
X3:Terran Conflict + Star Ruler (already have X3:R and Star Ruler might not even be finished and still have to play Sins of a Solar Empire)
Empire: Total War (loved TW:M2, is this even of the same quality?)

In short, which of the 6 choices above has your preference?

I haven't played Sengoku, but I personally found Dragon Age, Fallout 3 and Empire Total War to be rather disappointing. Terran Conflict is supposedly quite good, but...New Vegas gets my vote.

The gameplay is virtually identical to Fallout 3's, but it's better written and feels much more like the old turn-based Fallout games.

*edit* I'll go into a bit more detail:

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are very similar, and people tend to be split about which game is better.
New Vegas has a lot more depth and better writing, so I prefer that. Fallout 3 has lots of explosions and giant mutants to kill, so others prefer that. Either is probably worth playing, so go with whichever sounds more appealing.

Empire Total War...felt really broken to me. I loved the previous games in the series, and I really like the 17th century setting that Empire takes place in, but the ranged troop combat just felt unsatisfying compared to Medieval's more heated melee battles. Plus I remember that the AI felt dead stupid, but that might have been patched in the past few years.

Dragon Age Origins was a decent attempt at another Baldurs Gate-like game, but once you start comparing them you'll notice that DAO comes up short. There are smaller parties, less professions, less tactics to use, less interesting dungeons, and so on.
It certainly has a lot of polish and content, and if you're just looking for a modern BG-like game then it's worth a try, but I got bored of it very quickly.

+1 to New Vegas, with mods, you can treat it like one and the our-the-box product is quite fantastic nonetheless.

It rather depends, what you are looking for.

My vote goes for either Fo3 or FO NV.FO3 is more of an exploration game, and the GOTY edition has ALOT more content, but characters, and the wasteland is far less RPG like, flat and simple. But the exploration, and the rummeting through the wasteland is extremely fun in FO3. + Mods are really good and fun.

FO:NV is fare more of an RPG, with the good and the bad, the world has better characters ,and a more logical world, with far more likable characters. But there is less exploration in the end, since the areas are often linked to quests, or characters. So alot of things are tied together, and not alot of random things to stumble across. IF you can get her to buy you all the DLC for it aswell, NV gets alot closer to FO3 in content, the DLC is more inconsistant, it ranges from absolutely brillient to forgettable.

But both of the games, will easily ahve 60+ hours of fun in them. Basicly depends on what you are looking for the most.

DA:O I have a more of a problem reccomending outright. Ok To start off its basicly a good game, and it DOES have alot in common with RPGs from yesteryear, and overall it reminds me alot of NWN2. So the core mechanics are solid.

The game world however are as uninspired and steriotypical as can be. Over half of the content feels like rehashes of LOTR, and the game is often letting itself down, with the really restricting character development, and pretty hamfisted writing.

If you can get over the "Havent I seen this before, havent I done this before" feeling flowing through the game, it is a rather good game, it can be really funny, and the banter is quite good.

As you can see I have a preference for RPGs :P So ofcourse I will reccomend them, X3 was not really my cup of team, but not a bad game by a long shot.

Empire: total war I suppose is one of the less impressive total war games, If you love the TW series then the game is likely a sure bet, but when I playied it it was clunky, and slightly buggy. The later entries both seemed to play better and work better to me, but might be my imagination.

I do not know what Sengoku is, and thus I will not comment on it, giving a good game a bad rep just because I do not know it is a pretty poor thing to do, and giving good publicity if it is bad, is nearly as bad. So If anyone could give input on this game, I myself would be interrested in knowing aswell :D

I would probably say Fallout 3.

It's a great game and you can spend so many hours just exploring the world.

Like you also said, it is more of an open world experience than New Vegas, IMO
