I was wondering if anyone out there has ever had a problem with there computer locking up and making a screeching noise during game play. It happens with all my games and seems to be random. sometimes it happens after 5min. into the game sometimes can go an hour or so.

SYSTEM:

intel pentium dual core d 960 3.6ghz/ 2gb ddr2/ 250gb

geforce nvidia 7300gs 256mb

creative sound blaster audigy 4

250gb serial sata 2 hd

I have tried a couple of things I tried shutting down back ground programs, but it did not help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

screeching noise sounds like a hard drive problem, as in its not working properly and it shuts down and scratches... not good because data loss is in the future... If you see any type of data loss it is definately your hard drive.

This usually happened with old DOS games on newer computers that run them without DosBox, but I guess it's not the case here. It would really help to know if the screeching noises come from the speakers (sound card issue, or more likely, Windows problem) or from the computer unit itsself (and then you've got a more serious problem, most likely with the hard drive, as has been said earlier).

The screeching noise comes from the speakers. It changes to when it locks up sometimes it is loud sometimes it is not as loud. and varies in pitch. I also noticed that it varies with the game also. City of heros/villans willplay longerbefore a lock up. Where battlefield 2 or BFME will lock up much quicker.

Ah yes, the infamous "squeal of death." This has been a problem with Creative's Audigy series of sound cards since 2002. Just do a Google search on "squeal of death" or "screech of death" and you'll see what I mean. It seems to manifest on several hardware configurations, though the combination of a Creative Audigy cardand an nVidia GeForce graphics card seems particularly prone.

I've never discovered a suitable solution, and believe me I've looked, though some people suggest that certain workarounds have solved the problem for them (moving the Audigy card to the top PCI slot, for example). Nothing has solved the problem for me or my Audigy 2/GeForce 6600 GT except saving often and rebooting when necessary.

I am with you bro, I have the X-act problem you do. I have had it for some time now and have been playing games but it never fails [CRASH]

I dont always get the loud screeching sound blasting through my speakers sometimes while in-game my whole System Locks-up without warning. I have tried everything from diffrent Memory sticks to Anti-Lockup apps [no good.......]

I have not tried a New Video Card or another HardDrive seeing as I have a New 120GB drive but I wont rule it out.

Here is my system...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Curently Windows XP Media Center Edition [others I have used WinXP Pro, LastXP v14 and v15]

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ 2.01GHz

1.00 GB RAM DDR400

GeForce 6800XTreme 256MB DDR3

Realtek AC'97 Audio [onboard Sound]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried in the past 24 hours the latiest Video drivers from the XFX website who make the card and as of an hour ago I tried the latiest nvidia driver for my series 6 card.......no good

I am going to try to rebuild a Dell Deminsion 4600 that someone gave me with my Video card in it to see if its the Video card.

I have been a bit lazy about systematicaly troubleshooting this major problem [seeing as i love gaming] but now that I have some extra equipment to mix-n-match maybe I can find the problem.

I also have a soundblaster Live card i can through into the mix.

I will start this sometime this week after I finish Downloading LastXP v16.1 [one Kick-arss XPMod]

What is funny its taken me this long just to run a search in google for "on all games PC locks up and makes sound" and found someone with the same problem, this post =-P

Ok, I just uninstalled my onboard RealTek'97 audio card and installed my Old SoundBlaster Live! PCI

Upon restart of OS and start of Sword Of The Stars it locks-up the PC with a loud multi-tone screech right after intro.

Next I am going to see if I can get this old Dell Deminsion 4600 up with my Harddrive and Video card out of my currwent PC.

The Dells Pentium4 2.8 is just a tad bit more than my Athlon 2.01 it may be an even trade ssing as I dont use the Athlon 64bits ability much.

I hope its not my Mobo or Processor.........then again I hope its not my GeForce 6800XTreme. Video cards are not cheap.

I may not get tho this until Monday. I need to finish downloading LastXP v16.1 I havent tried it yet. LastXP v15 was a sweet OS mod, and ran great, better than Windows XP right out of the box [not that LastXP comes in a box=-)]

Yes, I have done the Bios Update on my Gigabyte GA-K8NS Mobo to the new one [F19] It was a long time ago..like a couple years or so. I am starting to wonder if I had this problem when the mobo Bios rev. was F17.........

I guess I can add one more option to test for.

Thanx for the advice.
