I have a core2duo 2.2Ghz, 1Gb ddr2 ram, 8600gt with 1Gb video ram.

I plan to play games like Bioshock 2, Fallout 3, Left4dead, GTA IV, CoD: world at war, NFS Undercover, Dead Space, Farcry2, Crysis warhead, Sacred 2 fallen angel, the witcher, F.E.A.R.2 Project origin(not released yet), Mass effect, Mirrors edge and so on...

Any suggestions or comments? What settings should I use.

If anybody knows pls specify the game and its optimized setting

COD will probably be able to be maxed, far cry 2 on medium, crysis on medium, bioshock on medium, Not sure about the rest, unless fear 2 is using the same engine (which i doubt) as fear (1) then max that to, the others probably medium, this is on 1024x768 or 1280x1024. Bioshock runs great though definatley on a 8600gt (i tried it before i returned it for my 3850), it's really beautifull, crysis was okay, but as always, avoid AA completely on the 8600, and medium settings, shaders make a big impact too.

Yeah, shaders make a big impact. Especially on Crysis (actually, shadows on Crysis is also very demanding). I have a 256MB Geforce 8600GT, and I maxed out W@W with 40-60 fps (nothing below, if so very rarely), Bioshock ran fine on 1440x900 but I had a sound problem (I read Vista has issues with it) and it was near max, Left 4 Dead I maxed, don't bother with GTA 4 at least for now, and Warhead I play on 1440x900 with everything on very high except shadows (minimum), objects (mainstream = medium), and shaders (medium) with about 30-50 fps and sometimes dipping into the 20s. But I will say once I got into the frozen levels I had to put the shaders on minimum.

Hey Bedram793, Most importantly, we both have the same card(hope we have the same processor and ram, core2duo and 1Gb). I use XP though You have a 256 Mb 8600gt, but i have 1Gb 8600gt. So If you know or if you've checked out someone's 512 or 1Gb 8600gt, will it be better than the 256 Mb? I'm talking about whether it'll be good enough for games in the near future like F.E.A.R.2 Project origin, Bioshock 2 etc.

I have exactly the same rig except for my 2G of RAM

I can run most of those at default high settings except for GTA4, Crysis Warhead, NFS Undercover

I think Bioshock, FEAR, COD4, Company of heroes and HL2, probably more but those run good on my 8600GT.

O yeah, i think for Fallout 3, your going to have to play with default settings.

The 1GB of the 8600GT won't make much of a difference compared to a 256mb 8600GT but adding another GB of ram will help. Most games of today should run fine on high settings at 1280x1024. Future games will have to likely to be played with medium settings or so.

Like others have said games such as BioShock, Mass Effect, The Witcher, NBA 2K9 run perfect for me at 1280x1024 everything maxed. For games like Crysis and GTA IV the settings will have to be toned down. For Crysis custom configs can tweak the game to improve performance considerably.

Fallout 3 should be playable on high or max settings since my laptop which has a 8600M GT can run it very well with ultra settings, shadows medium at 1280x800. Haven't played it on my desktop.

I don't have GTA IV yet but it doesn't seem to optimised that great so its hard to tell since much more powerful systems are struggling.

You said "For Crysis custom configs can tweak the game to improve performance considerably." How is this done? On most games(even on older games of 2006-2007), I'm able to play on high at 1280x800 and even 1440x900, But when the game loads and I start playing it's laggy(20-25fps). then after few minutes it goes to 30-40fps. I use fraps to measure it. is this normal? For San Andreas, it started at 20fps and after 30min it went max to 50-60fps.

Hm another gig of ram in your setup will help you loads. I remember when I first bought my 8600gt (my rig had only 1gb of ram) Crysis sucked on my pc, thought it was my card, then got another gig of ram and hell, performance improved greatly

No, if fact it's slower. How much slower depends on what versions you are comparing(ddr2 or ddr3).
