i'm replaying the witcher atm, on hard mode, it's so so much better than before. combat isn't just cool animations, it's really tactical use of alchemy and positioning etc. who said the witcher combat was boring???

crysis is also great on hard mode, you finally feel pushed to really utilise the nanosuit, and not just use it, but use it well.

what other games really come into their own on hard mode? yno, when you suddenly go, ooooohhhhhhhhh that's what they're getting at.

I was playing CoD 4 on Veteran half way through then I got super frustrated. Veteran on the sniper mission where you have to make a stand at the ferris wheel is super duper hard but at least it teaches you to cover constantly. Changed it to Hardcore after that :S

The first FEAR immediately springs to mind. There's some truly great enemy AI in that game, and they WILL kick your ass unless you're completely strategic in your approach to combat one hundred percent of the time.

Crysis

STALKER (series)

Fallout 3

The Witcher

Starcraft 2

Compnay of heroes

Dawn of war (all of them)

I think these games are the ones Ive noticed improved when the diff got bumped up, mostly due to ai, or gameplay alterrations, not just making enemies harder to kill, or mumping up thier hitpoints (well, ok there are in a few cases)

Definitely Crysis.

I normally don't like the FPS genre but Crysis was different. I played it first on Easy, then Normal, Hard and finally on Delta. The game provides a better experience with each increase in difficulty. I loved Cloak Mode :)

God of War games (1, 2 and PSP spin-offs, haven't played 3) are so much better in Hard Mode (Very Hard is a bit overkill). In Easy and Normal, you can just spam the hell out of your Square button and win, but in Hard, you have to actually time the dodge and blocks, you also need to think whether to use normal attacks which are fast but weak or strong attacks which are strong but can kill you due to its slow attack speed.

In short, the game turned from a mindless button masher into a challenging action game.

EDIT: Wait, I'm mentioning a console game. Fail.

As for PC games, I think Torchlight is definitely better in Hard, whereas it's just pure boredom in lower modes.

Any game on multiplayer, but for SP Alien Swarm on brutal with onslaughts on and friendly fire on hardcore, Modern Warfare is also a good example for hard difficulty, Half Life 2 etc, but that's only FPSs, RTS is the more tactic wise - C&C 3 Tiberium Wars, Generals, RUSE, Starcraft 2 and many more

Half-Life 2 had difficulty settings? I only played through it like once on the original xbox and tried to a few times after that.. I never really noticed it had difficulty settings.. games that are fun on hard mode I would say Modern Warefare 2 it was fun cause it wasn't frustrating and it wasn't bad story wise either imo. another game I can see being really fun is fallout new vegas.. that hardcore mode seems pretty intense.

Yes. R6V2 and BFBC2 would be my choices as well. Especially R6V2. Good times.

STALKER, Fallout's and System Shock 2 are great at their hardest for that feeling of barely being able to survive or get by throughout the game. I usually find RTS's and RPG-heavy games far too difficult at their hardest.

I found RES5 to be most enjoyable on the hardest difficulty.

Crysis would be my first choice.

Bioshock would be my second. I'm still stuck in Hephaestus. Pesky Houdinis and tommy gun splicers pairing up.
