Hey all.

I like strategy games, and I like games that involves building things. What I am looking for is a game that has great depth. Meaning, lots of upgrades, lots of ways to diversify in your style of building. Any suggestions?

If by what you just described you mean a '4X' game, then I suggest that you take a look at 'Civilization IV' with the 'Beyond the Sword' expansion pack and the 'Rise of Mankind' mod. Shouldn't cost too much and should run on just about anything.

Galactic Civilizations 2 Ultimate - great 4X game

Sins of a Solar Empire - odd blend of 4X and RTS

Heroes of Might and Magic games - check GOG, you should know what these are xD

Jagged Alliance games - not building games, but a lot of strategy in training your mercs and navigating the fields.

Do you recommend Civilization V or IV? I already have V, but I didn't play it yet. I am willing to go for IV if it is much better.

Apparently IV is a lot more hardcore and V is more accessible and explained better.

I am new to Civilization, so I'm not sure what to choose. What do you mean by hardcore anyway?

I wouldn't say that IV is 'better' but with everything that I described earlier, I would certainly say that it is far more deep than Civ V.

I'd recommend Anno 1404 (or Dawn of Discovery if you're in N.A.). Might even want to give Tropico 3 a shot if you're into building sim games. If you already have Civ V, it'll behoove you to try out that game as you already have it. See if you like it. You have nothing left to lose lol.

Terraria.

It isn't an RTS, but it sounds like what you're looking for. It is a 2D platformer/RPG that throws you into a random generated world with a sword, a pickaxe, and an axe. You can chop down trees for wood, harvest minerals, dig into the ground, and use the things you've collected to build whatever you want. You have pre-generated items such as doors, beds, workbenches, etc. But you build your own houses, towers, whatever. You can even build your own under-ground city. You also have to fend off creatures and protect your home from them, and even hunt these creatures for other materials.

Best part is - It's only $10 on Steam. And it also has online multiplayer.
