Games that went Missing In Action

Apart from the more obvious titles like Duke Nukem Forever, there are some other games that have been announced since the start of the millennium, but seem to have fallen off the gaming radar.

Recently I was looking around for new titles in the works to add to my tracking list, and decided to use Gamespot's database to uncover any games that were 'TBA'. Sure enough, there were loads, but when I started going through them I started to notice many of these games were announced a long time ago. Did they ever see the light of day? Were they cancelled? Renamed? What happened to these games? Some in Gamespot's list were cancelled according to IGN (which means GS is getting a bit sloppy updating it's database), so I didn't include most of those, but many others are still MIA. I've compiled a list with links.

Last Seen in 2001 - is it safe to assume these were cancelled? After all, DNF has been in production for 10 years...

Rogue Wars - ReAllis - futuristic squad-based FPS/TBS space strategy.
CS-12 - US Army, Quicksilver Software - a US army strategy game - did this turn into America's Army (2002) or War Dogs (2004) or was it simply cancelled?
Axis Arena - JAMIE System Development - multiplayer FPS with giant robots in space.

Last Seen in 2002 - should we assume the worst for these games? Should we even care about them?

Snapshot! Paparazzi - Philoslabs - play the part of a photojournalist looking for those compromising photos!
Steel Beasts II - Strategy First, eSim games - a tank combat sim
Shadow - Vae Victis - a modern day tactical action game that was supposed to use the Tribes 2 engine.
Underworld: Crime Does Pay - Phoenix Entertainment - an FPS/RTS about organised crime
W.A.T.E.R. Online - Arithmetic Studios - MMOFPS that takes place on Earth after water runs short
nTrap - AGD Software - sci-fi action game allowing vehicle control for counterespionage missions.
Deep Angel - K26 - futuristic submarine game
Day Of The Mutants - Techland - Action RPG in post-apoclyptic setting. Did this title get revamped to become Chrome (2003) I wonder?

Last Seen: 2003 - cancelled or just lost in development hell?

RattHunter - Game Factory Interactive, Secret Sign - was supposed to be a sci-fi shooter
Armobiles - Ganymede - a futuristic vehicle combat game
Glympse - Sojourn - apparently was going to be an MMO - a fitting name considering we only got a glimpse at it?
Universe Unlimited: Earth's Assault - Ethereal Evolution - supposedly an MMORPG set in 2262 - or is that the release date?
Rise Of Power - Amped Labs - supposedly an MMOFPS where police battle the underworld.
Shanghai Dragon - e-Pie Entertainment - an FPS based in 1937 Shanghai - did it get lost in a time warp?
Mech Arena: The First Match - Made by Kiddies - a mech combat game - did the 'Kiddies' grow up and lose interest?
FX Racing - Milestone - a combat racing game - the only 'FX' I see is a vanishing act.
World In Flames - Matrix Games - WW2 strategy game - did this one go up in smoke?
ExArch - Realm Interactive, NCsoft - a sci-fi MMO - Ex-Production?
America II - Data Becker, CDV - a sequel to the post-Civil War era RTS game
Ostrich Runner - Geleos Development - An Ostrich racing game! WTF? O.o
M.O.S. - Sharkbyte - a futuristic MMO tactical role-playing shooter - but did the Shark byte off more than it could chew? :D
Hybrid - Vulcan Software - a futuristic FPS. On the official site it says 'Just a dream? You'll wish it was!'. Well...is it? O.o
HILL Project - Gaming Side - 3D space shooter where you are confronted by hordes of enemies and gigantic boss characters...
Private Wars - 1C, TS Group - modern squad-based action game. Maybe it's too 'private' to show anything...

Last Seen: 2004 - harder to decide what happened to these, considering game development cycles can last 3 or 4 years...

Phase: Exodus - Russobit-M, Horns & Hoofs - a strategy RPG set in post-apocalyptic Earth.
Atlantis Rising - Icarus Studios - supposed to be an MMO that brings you to an underwater kingdom. Did it drown?
Sahara - TKO Software - game based on the movie - it wouldn't surprise me if this was buried in a sandstorm.
eXtreme Demolition - Flashpoint Games - vehicular combat game where you can drive on walls and ceilings. Maybe they lost direction?
Solar: Campaigns - Brat Designs - a sci-fi FPS battlefield wannabe game from the makers of Breed. Maybe they flew too close to the sun...
Sword Of Dracula - Critical Mass - a comic-inspired FPS where you go up against Dracula and an army of terrorist vampires? Sounds like this one sucks! :P
Toon Army - Brat Designs - WW2 shooter cartoon **** which looks sort of fun in the video trailer. The second game by the Breed makers that failed to show.
Knightblade: Final Flight - 3000AD, Inc. - space sim with large space carriers and smaller ships. Final Flight or Final Curtain?
Grafan - Emogence - a first person action RPG that looked graphically promising.
Kingpin 2 (working title) - Interplay? - sequel to the gang crime hit. Did this one get a broken bottle in the face?
Furballz: Let The Fur Fly! - Primate Studios - a space-faring Hamster game! Bring it on Fuzzball!
Freedom Fighters 2 (working title) - Io Interactive - sequel to the hit 3rd person shooter. But the studio is now working on Kane & Lynch, so has this game been locked in development hell?
Vision - Altar Interactive, Octagon - a fantasy RPG. For a game named 'Vision' there's not a lot to see...
Forgotten Stories: Echoes Of Destiny - another fantasy RPG. Maybe they just forgot about it...
War In Afghanistan - Shrapnel Games, ProSim - RTS game covering conflicts in Afghanistan. Hmmm...maybe a touchy subject?
Modern Naval Battles: WW2 at Sea - Battlefront.com, DVG - WW2 naval strategy game. Sunk or still afloat?
Reclamation - Lyra Studios - yet another MMORPG
King Arthur: Pendragon Chronicles - Spore Games - 3D RTS based on King Arthur.
Chester Adventures - Heaven X - action adventure arcade game where you have to stop an evil wizard from taking over the world. Did they cast an invisibility spell on it?
WW2: Pacific Heroes - Merscom - WW2 aerial combat game
Alex Carver: Futurebrighter - Heaven X - a sci-fi FPS apparently.
The Chronicles Of Ny - Clownkeep - a fantasy RPG. Or is the end nigh?
Sun Crusher: The Great War - Bad Nose - Sci-fi action game with strategy elements.
Black Sky - David Grassi - a 2D space adventure. Sucked into the void?
Neuro - Revolt Games - sci-fi FPS. The domain name for the developer expiring does not bode well.
Xtreeme Forces - Raptor Entertainment - 3D RTS. The developer website gives no mention of the game, but instead seems to be pushing the X-Force game engine. Site not updated since 2005. I'd say this one is dead.
Wartime Command: Battle for Europe 1939-1945 - 1c, Codemasters - WW2 3D RTS. They need to rethink their strategy for releasing information about their game.
Mourning AKA Age Of Mourning AKA Realms Of Torment - Limitless Horizons Entertainment - fantasy MMO. If they can't even decide on the name, I'm not surprised this hasn't seen the light of day - unless it was released under yet another name. O.o
Angels vs Devils - Enigma Software - 3D fantasy action shooter. The only enigma is what happened to this game.
Eschaton Online/Eschaton: Chain Of Command - Gnostic Labs - team-based MMO tactical space sim.
The Lord Of The Creatures - Arvirago - fantasy adventure game that looked quite interesting
Hollow - ZootFly - FPS in alternate 1970s where WW2 never happened.
Poacher - Exileworks - controversial FPS where you hunt endangered species.
Rule In Hell - MegaHard Software - MMORPG with vehicles and jetpacks
Relic: Game Of The Ancients - Strategy First, Archangel Studios - multiplayer fantasy-themed strategy board game.
Civilization's Dawn - iEntertainment Network - fantasy themed MMORPG
KnightShift 2: Curse Of Souls - Koch Media, Reality Pump - RPG semi-RTS fantasy game.
War Dogs - Quicksilver Software - a tactical action game allowing control of 30 soldiers, originally developed for US Army.

Last Seen in 2005

Vatan - Fy Software - a dark 23rd century Sci-Fi FPS where you visit different planets. Lost in space?
Enosta: Discovery Beyond - Akella - space RPG. Practically no information on it. Maybe it was just a pipe dream...
Imperium: Great Battles Of Rome - FX Interactive, Haemimont - RTS set in ancient Rome. Maybe it went the way of the Ninth Legion?
Project Delta - Playlogic - a Tactical FPS where you fight aliens and travel through time.
Eye Of The Storm (working title) - Yager - action game about guerilla warfare - or is it just an Ageia tech demo?
Scooter War3z - Team6 Game Studios - Racing game with scooters
Shwarzenberg - Radon Labs - WW2 action stealth game - I seem to recall this game being put on hold, but was it cancelled?
Ashes: Two Worlds Collide - no developer info - single player 3D RPG.
Cry Havoc - Artificial Studios - team-based multiplayer FPS.
Stranger Online - Fireglow - another MMORTS game.
Creature Conflict: The Clan Wars - Mithis Interative, Cenega Publishing - turn-based tactical real-time action arcade game with animals - apparently.
Swashbucklers: Blue and Grey AKA Legacy Of Drake - 1c, Akella - a historic adventure action game in the Caribbean.

Last Seen in 2006 - I'm going to assume these are still in development, although there has been no news for more than a year in some cases...

Black Powder Wars: Battles Of Napoleon - Double Shot Design, Matrix games - tactical combat game with multiplayer that was supposed to have been released in 2005.

The Lost City Of Malathedra - Ethereal Darkness Interactive - Adventure game.
Dead Island - Techland - modern FPS with zombies
The Rock Of Pariahs - Centauri - a combat racing game
Dark Matter: The Baryon Project - Pixelcage - Sci-Fi FPS/Space sim
Drive'n'Kill - Psycho Craft - vehicular combat in a post-apocalyptic universe, apparently.

2004 seemed to be the major year for announcing games that didn't seem to come to fruition - unless those titles are still in Development Hell.

If you know what happened to these games, or have any comments about them, be sure to post them here.

Some of these games look interesting, it would be shame if they have been scrapped

I agree. I remember starting to track some of those games because they looked really good, but information seems to have dried up.

Shanghai Dragon is out already, in Chinese that is...

I picked it up in Shanghai (where else...) in 2004, but was never able to succesfully install it. Judging by the manual and the FMV I managed to run, it seemed highly derivative with a very limited set of enemies.

Aha! That's one mystery solved. Thanks for the feedback on that one. :)
