In many story driven games, you are often against a main antagonist. You are often the good guy, and he is just pure evil. This is to make you feel good about beating the bad guy. The thing is, sometimes I find myself wanting to be the bad guy. For example, maybe instead of saving the world from NOD in a Command & Conquer game, maybe I want to conquer the world as Kane.
Some games have explored this theme to an extent. We have the Overlord games, but those are a little too campy. Dungeon Keeper touches on the subject. We also have the option to make evil choices in some Bioware games. The thing is, I would like to see a story driven game where the player takes the role of someone who is pure evil. No "less evil" choices, no moral ambiguity. The role should be of someone who wants to dominate the known world, and cause suffering, destruction, and rape of all known people. The role of someone truly narcissistic to the core. The bosses of the game would be the good guys, who you would normally play as in other games. The story itself would emphasize just how good and righteous the good guys are in trying to stop you, and just how bad of a person you are. The ending wouldn't be the "happily ever after" you see in most games, but something dark and twisted.
Even after decades of gaming history, we still have barely scratched the surface of the idea of making the player into the game's antagonist. Do you all agree?
