IMO, music is a very important part of any game, it can adds a lot to the ambiance and makes some moments simply stunning. I often try to get my hands on the sound track of games like Hitman, Homeworld and Lineage 2...which are good example of games with good music, some parts of these games literaly blew me away.

Now, tell me what are your favourites ones. By the way, im not talking about games like nfs where the music is taken from an actual music group.

jeremy soules stuff is generally excellent imho. he composes the music for games like the guild wars series, icewind dale, giants citizen kabuto, total anhilation, prey and many others. his most recent work is supreme commander which has excellent music overall. the only soundtrack i was dissapointed with from him was the one to morrowind.....it was a bit meh imho. oblivions was much better though. Jeff van dyke also does great stuff for the total war games. the credits tune to rome is brilliant. Deus ex also has some great tunes. my fav is in the versa life offices in hong kong.

Some of my favorites are Outlaws, Quake 1, and Quake 2. I love the themes to Doom 3 and Thief, but as that's pretty much the only music in either I'm not sure they count.

To be honest, though, I find myself turning off the music a lot and letting iTunes play in the background instead. Soundtrack music for games, TV, and movies tend to the bombastic, orchestral stuff, like what John Williams writes, and I'm not a fan of it.

not many games have really stood out as having spectacular music for me, but a few i have been impressed with

half life 1 & 2 - some really great kickin' techno music that isn't just good sounding, it's extremely well timed - helps with the atmosphere awesomely

splinter cell: chaos theory - there were three levels of detection in the game for how aware of you the guards were, and each piece of music had three levels too, and the music layered over and changed depending on what was happening in the game, instead of just different music playing - the actual music itself may not have been spectacular, but the morphing technique was ace

leaving the pc for a sec, as far as soundtracks go, wipeout 2097 (xl) on the playstation has, simply put, the best game soundtrack ever - i gather the pc version has a completely different soundtrack, but i've never bothered to check... but there's some awesome techno in there, prodigy, fsol and fluke to name a few - great stuff

vice city has a killer soundtrack, too

problem with a lot of game music is that, like just about every film made before 1975, music is often just used too much and tries to be overly important, like the sound director's relying on getting noticed to keep that second mortgage at bay or something - too loud and too frequent and too rubbish

I'm gonna be clieche and say the FF series. Just because every time I hear a tune that reminds of the legendary battle music! I have to go play one of the games. Lol.

I think Halo did it as well, and GW for me.

Those are my top three. :-D

That series does have an excellent soundtrack and it fits so well in the gameplay.  Good call!

I am going to add that I love Knights of the Old Republic I and II soundtracks as it really enhances the game nicely.  There are some oddball tastes that I enjoy, like the opening theme songs for Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party.  Planescape Torment has a decent soundtrack and Morrowind is always a pleasure to listen to.

My current favorites that I'm listening to know are Fable: The Lost Chapters, Beyond Good and Evil, Final Fantasy XI, and Warcraft II.
