Im new to vista and actually bought it hoping the increase in memory would equal an increase in gaming ability. Ive got 4 gig of ram and noticed no real improvements with heavy ram user mmos like wow. I did a little research and learned about microsofts "great" superfetch system which essentially uses all ur excess ram to keep random stuff stored that u perhaps may access at any given time. Im wondering is my cp accessing all that useless crud while im gaming and impacting my games? And if so can i turn this off with no ill effects? Or am i just screwed lol.

yes you can turn it off i also prefer not to use windows superfetch.

To disable

press Win+R and type services.msc

look for superfetch double click it,

disable and stop it and your done

there are also a number of other services you may find useless that you can disable

Um...yah disable whatever you want but do not disable Superfetch, that's one of the actual useful features if Vista.

Disabling superfetch is the first thing I did after installing Vista.

I would NOT disable superfetch unless you're trying to run Vista with not enough RAM. It's a valuable feature.

It's mostly games with large open maps and complex textures that you will see the benefits of 4GB of RAM. Doesn't anyone remember back in the day when they first started playing BF2 as one did the texture-loading stutter step at the start of every level as their HD spun away in abandon? Well with 4GB that's a thing of the past. All those FPS with huge individual levels now load smoothly and quickly.

lol i remember that, was really annoying i just stood stilm and did nothing while i got a cup of hot chocolate or something. i use 8GB of RAM (sig lies, cba updating it) And it was a MASSIVE improvement from 2GB. Crysis benifited a lot but i'd say company of heroes got the best improvement. oh and load times are a fraction of what they were, not in the older games though as i don't think they were designed with that amount of RAM in mind.

well ok so some ppl disable some dont. Is there any rhyme or reason to it? I mean usefulness aside is it necessary and if so what does it do besides hold on to random garbage ive got floating around on my hard drive?"

I disabled Superfetch because I don't want the system to monitor everything I'm doing and to assume that I might want a certain program to be held in memory to be opened sooner. That kind of "free thinking" can start and stop while you're playing a game and impact performance. I just want my system to sit and wait for me. I don't mind waiting a few extra seconds for a program to open. I just want to make sure my system sits and does nothing until I'm ready.
