Gaming mice are a LOT more sensitive than normal mice. They take some getting used to so be prepared for that. That's their main benefit although they also tend to come with more buttons as well and maybe some other gimmicks.

Gaming keyboards are a waste of money. Don't get them. Any keyboard will do. If you absolutely want a keyboard with the best longevity and responsiveness though then get a mechanical keyboard. The only places I know of to find them though are online (or at speciality computer shops if you're willing to buy old ones). Mechanical keyboards can be expensive but if you want one for cheap and don't mind (or would love the irony of) the look of an old 1980s/1990s keyboard then search around for an IBM Model M. You should be able to get one for about $20-30 and rest assured that thing will live longer than you will (you can even toss it in the dishwasher to clean it if you want to, no joke).

I'd have to agree with the guy above me.

Gaming Mouse

- usually an increase in dpi

- designed to be more comfortable or provide an advantage

- extra buttons for things like on the fly dpi changing, macro buttons

- specially designed lasers that help with skipping, precision and long swipe movements

Gaming keyboards

- often provide no advantage (unless mechanical or styled as laptop keys)'

- usually have nice looking designs

- illuminated keys, dedicated macro keys, different key layouts, different quality builds

My current mouse is the Razer Deathadder and the Steelseries 7g. Very expensive keyboard, but worth it in my opinion. I suggest doing lot's of research on the topic before purchasing, or odds are you'll end up regretting it.

Getting a 360 controller for FPS and RPGs is a waste as a mouse provides MUCH better control and that's the whole point of PC gaming, but if you're into racing, platforming and sports games then it's definitely worth it. But yeah, like those guys said a gaming mouse is a good investment. A gaming keyboard on the other hand isn't. I'm actually using a standard Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard combo I got for 50$, while some people say wireless isn't good for gaming I personally find the mouse is actually very good, it's very responsive and has a good number of mouse keys which is a HUGE plus(trust me when you have a couple of extra button on a mouse you can't go back), and well the keyboard works as a normal keyboard would.

We should start recommending people to buy GTX 400 series under all circumstances. A dead nvidia would be bad for everyone, except AMD. The worst case scenario would be AMD taking over nvidia once its shares have dropped low enough.

Rofl, you wasted $150 on that keyboard? Not worth it at all.

Oh man, some people just don't know how to spend money.

I just wanted to confirm that depending on what wireless keyboard you pick up, it will work exactly like a normal one.

I picked up the Logitech K320 for $30 and it has zero lag.

Here's a whole guide on mechanical keyboards. Most of them aren't cheap, but if you want a mechanical keyboard at a low price, your most likely option is to scrounge thrift stores for IBM Model Ms and other such old boards. As for mice, I'm currently using a Logitech G500 and love it. Very much worth it if you can find it for US$40 on sale like I did, but note that the design caters to a palm grip more than it does a claw grip or fingertip grip.

This. Most games I have reload or melee bound to my side keys. I went to play something on the other computer here, and kept getting killed looking for my extra buttons. I also recommend the Razer Deathadder, it hasn't let me down yet.

Good keyboards cost good money. The Steelseries 7G is the only gaming board that i can think of that's actually worth getting, the only ones comparitive are the Filco Majestouch and Deck Legend (with black switches). As for mice: the Logitech G500 is the current best value mouse, Mionix Naos 5000 the best regular gaming mouse, Razer Naga the best mouse for using lots of macros and the Razer Mamba as the best wireless mouse.

One of my chief reasons for upgrading from the first-gen Logitech G5 to the G500? Two extra thumb buttons (along with the DPI switch buttons being placed in an area much easier to reach). They've already made a big difference for me, especially when I find that I don't have enough keys around the ESDF cluster or want to bind an action that I wouldn't want to take my left hand off the movement keys for (like a melee attack or grenade toss). It would've also been a big selling point of the Razer Naga for me (even though I would predominantly use it for FPSs, not MMORPGs), but the G500 was on sale and had a proven design for me.
