Just what is the deal with them? I've always been using some cheap 20 bucks mouse and keyboard combo, and I've never had problem putting a bullet into the other sniper's head first just because they were using some so-called pro gaming mice and keyboards.

What exactly makes them better? I always considered that the best gaming mice and keyboards are the ones you are accustomed to yourself, not some sets recommended by other folks.

Keyboards, you don't need a good one at all. Though I type a lot so, they are nice in general to have. Keytronic keyboards are so nice, they are the closest you can get to an IBM model M keyboard without killing your wallet. Gaming mice do help, noticibly over a cheapo one. Though getting used to a mouse is more important, I used a really cheap Microsoft wireless mouse, the first ones they had and I was like hella pro at css. I switched to a g5 and I was suckier at first, but then I got used it. When I go back to that old mouse I go ewewewewewew. Gaming mice do help. Keyboards, nah.

Hm, I don't fully understand your point. What I understood from it was that you were accustomed to your old Microsoft mouse, switched to a gaming mouse and became accustomed to that. So how was the gaming mouse better? All I could tell was that by the time you were accustomed to the gaming mouse you were no longer familiar with using the Microsoft mouse.

I agree with you TC. I've tried all types of mice and keyboards over the years and I've found the gaming mice to be overrated. The last mouse I had was a Razer Copperhead ... a complete waste of money that broke 6 months after buying it. After spending so much on a mouse I vowed never to spend that much money on a mouse ever again. Right now I'm using an el-cheapo Logitech mouse that connects via ps/2 lol!!! It works great and I actually preffer it to the overly twitchy copperhead.

On the keyboard front I do own a Logitech G15. Although I did get an amazing deal on this keyboard...$30 on ebay. It's nice to have. Does it make be better? No. The keyboard lighting up is useful though.

I've had my logitech mx518 for as long as I can remember and it's by no means the most expensive mouse you can buy but it's been a really good piece of kit for years now. Movements are so smooth and I found myself using switch-able DPI buttons more than I first expected. As well as these, the additional side buttons are useful for binding in game and are useful for web navigation (Back/Forward) out of game. I love it.

If you're serious about FPS games, a gaming mouse definately will make a difference, where-as a keyboard probably won't - I just have an old white microsoft keyboard as I like the feel and feedback of the keys!

Just fyi my Logitech g9x mouse is far from overrated it has 5700 dpi on op of other setting i can apply for different types of games and yes i still do have to get used to i, being that said i just got it but to pit your 20$$ mouse to this is no contest but everyone has there own preference. It also depends on the skill and game you are playing a person with a 100 dollar mouse that has no exp whatsoever let alone not being able to use the mouse's full potential isn't going to help them untill they gain a somewhat learning curve...

Keyboards overrated, Mice overpriced. I have a old Logitech £10 keyboard and apart from the shortcut keys its no different from £60 Logitech Keyboard, I have a £15 Saitek mouse and apart from the extra buttons and shape of the mouse I can barely tell the difference from my Razer Death adder that cost me around £45 when I got over all they are a little overrated and for the prices they are sold they are an extreme waste of money I would much rather save that money and get some games.

I think they try to claim the gaming mice have quicker speeds and such, better reaction times to your movements, but it's complete bull. There is no noticeable difference between them and some cheap non-gaming mouse. I think that the difference between wired and wireless is minimal as well. The major selling point in gaming mice, to me, would be having the option to quickly switch between different sensitivities and side-buttons located next to the thumb. But even non-gaming mice have them still. So I guess, in sum, I just don't know.

While they are unnecessary, they can be helpful and a nice thing to have.

I have a G15 (original) keyboard, and I would be lost without it. The LCD screen comes in handy for monitoring temperatures and the like while in game or watching a fullscreen movie. The macros are something I have come to love and would find it hard to do without. I have a macro setup for my commonly used emails, usernames, and passwords, so signing into a website or entering my email address is as easy as hitting one button. I was also able to make a macro to use in my accounting program that made my biggest and longest invoice to fill out now the quickest.

For the mouse I have a G9. I am a real fan of this mouse, not only does it preform very well, but the Logitech warranty is CRAZY!. The mouse comes with 2 different grips, a smooth and textured grip. Well within a year the smooth grip started "peeling", so I sent a picture to Logitech and they sent me an entire new mouse. So now I have 3 grips and a whole backup mouse.

As far as the use of the mouse, I love the adjustable DPI on the fly feature, ever play a game where you get in a turret or something and the spin speed is crazy slow? With just 2 touches of a button I have doubled my DPI, and doubled the speed. I also like the adjustable weights, I did not think that would matter, but I cannot stand this thing with no weights in it.

Like I said they are not necessary, but to me they are worth the extra money. Just my 2 cents though.

its a common misconception.. realistically there are many "gaming" mice out there its just that many "confused" periphreal developers believe they can slap water is wet claims, jargon and maybe a few led's onto a mouse and call it a "gaming" mouse.

Gamign mice and keyboards won't make you the best player but they do offer a great advantage. Just like having the best tennis racquet won't make you play like Federer but it will improve your game quite a bit.

Personally I find the Razer Diamondback and Microsoft Sidewinder X6 very comfortable so I don't think they're overrated.

Mice depend mostly on how you use it - I personally couldn't live without being able to move a full 1080p screen in about an inch of mouse travel, while still retaining fine control. You can do that on a cheap 800dpi mouse but it becomes noticably janky if you're not just making huge wide sweeps. Same goes for in-game control. You don't have to pay a lot, though. I got my G5 for $30 years ago. I also have a new G15 keyboard, which isn't as necessary - more of a luxury having the screen (for temperatures, network/memory use, cpu activity, time, etc) than any real benefit in-game. Unless you actually use macros, which I don't.

Gaming keyboards are overrated in my opinon, unless you need the extra buttons for an rts or something.

Gaming mice on the other hand are worth it. The programmable side buttons and high dpi are very nice.

Get the G500 if you have bigger hands our prefer a more arched grip on the mouse. I find this to be very comfortable compared to the forward sloping Razer mouse.

Pfffttt, no their needed, is like going for a hike. Are you gonna wear Kmart brand or Nike/New Balance. Dont be cheap get a nice mice, but I can deal with shotty keyboards since the reliability are the same from a 10dollar ms keyboard or 100dollar logitech.

They're not needed... but I do have a special keyboard on which I used to play WoW... for hotkeys and such. I put it up since I stopped playing MMO's, I really have no use for the extra keys. IMO that's the one thing that you'd need a different keyboard for - RTS's like StarCraft and C&C, and MMO's (SWTOR baby!)

I use a generic MS keyboard and a MS Comfort 3000 laser mouse. I used to have a Logitec G7 mouse and Saitek Eclipse keyboard and while I do notice the difference it's not that significant.

If you are wondering why I don't have that mouse and keyboard anymore... I broke them both

I had the g5 it was alright, cyber snipa stinger mouse is cheaper I think and 3200 dpi with a much better grip. I went to lachesis after that because the left button on it kept glitching out. I am sure yours will be fine, but it is a really really good mouse... when it worked at least for me.

I have a deathadder and the G13 gamepad. The mouse I love, as the customizable buttons let you keep your left hand more focused on your movement (I usually bind reload/last weapon to the deathadder's side keys.). As for the G13, it is more useful in some games than others. The ability to record macros on the fly, and use a joystick with my thumb instead of taking 3 fingers is interesting. All-in-all, if all you play is FPS, I would get a good Razer or Logitech mouse. RTS/(MMO)RPG? Some sort of macro-enabled keyboard can help a lot.

I've tried the G5, G9, MX518, MX310, MX510, Copperhead and the Deathadder. But mouse I love most is my lovely WMO 1.1, I sorta liked the 3.0, but I find the way I hold my mouse to feel best on the WMO. Its a simple Microsoft mouse, not really meant for gaming, but its just perfect for it. No matter how many times I've tried to change, a simple $20 WMO 1.1 is best for me.

I still say DPI is overrated, having more is NOT better. It can help feel a bit smoother on super high res. And maybe for working in desktop environments higher dpi helps. But in games themselves. 400dpi is all I need, and still to this day, most of the best players in Quake use the WMO, WMO 1.1a, and IME 3.0. All 400dpi mouses, only real reason if you ever see them not using them is because of sponsors.(I believe same for most CS players, but not sure, I'm not a CS player)

But with all that said, still go with what is comfortable, and of course, as long as it doesnt skip. A skipping mouse, or a lagging mouse is always going to be a disadvantage, not matter what.

Keyboards mostly the same, I've seen some so called "gaming keyboards" still have huge ghosting problems. Couldnt even hold W+D+ SPACE down all at same time. But, still overall, comfort is what matters most. I tried all sorts of keyboards, pretty much all gaming ones. But I'm crazy when it comes to how keys feel. I LOVE how scissor, laptop type keys feel.

But even then, some keyboards just felt too mushy even with it being "scissor key". Finally settled on a BTC6100. Best keyboard I've ever felt, $20 bucks tool. Sometimes you get lucky with cheaper products being the most comfortable, which always gives you an advantage in games when your comfortable, sometimes you dont. How much DPI, size, brand, etc is just all matter of preference. Nothing less, nothing more.
