the 5850 is in stock. I'd say get that for now, and see what nvidia has. Maybe even wait for ATI's Northern Islands series.

well, i dont know to many places that sell for the uK, but you can talk to Ultimategamer95and she can build you a customized system with 2x5970s if you want and probably for alot less than the website you reccomended.

I dont think you want a dual GPU card like the Gtx 295. I have it and it sucks when there arent SLI profiles for games you want to play. You always have to wait for Nvidia to release a new driver for the game. And 2x Gtx 295 is going to be nothing but problems.

You should wait for the GT300 cards or get the 5870.

wow your name is green now lol. It's kinda like a mood ring isn't it?. 2 5970's? lol that will cause a major CPU bottleneck :P. However, I wouldn't recommend that he buy the GTX 295's since they don't support directx 11 and it would be a shame to spend $600-$1000 on a video card(s) that won't be able to take advantage of directx 11 effects.

no love for the 5850? I didn't think the extra $100 was worth it for those few extra frames. Besides, the prices will go down for it later.

Well I think he wants an extreme gaming rig given the money he has to spend. Now I wouldn't recommend two 5970's because there will be a major CPU bottleneck (even for the fastest CPU on the market), especially at higher resolutions. However, If he wants me to get him two 5970's I will however, there will be limited scalability of 5970's in crossfirex due to that CPU bottleneck.

2 5970's is too hardcore! You will not see any big improvements, and as ultimategamer said, it will bottleneck every cpu. Better go with 2 5870's.

True very true :). However two 5870's are just as fast as a 5970 and a single 5970 costs less.
