actually you van get a pretty decent gaming rig for a good price (around 700 or so US, without moniter)
depends if you can put up with just High (not very high) or just medium details and a res of 1280x1024 would be niice

You can either buy a pre-built PC tower with everything you need in it, or you can buy all the individual parts and build the tower yourself for a bit cheaper than the pre-built, although be warned that there is a bit of a learning curve building you own and things can go wrong, or at least you will more than likely get stuck somewhere along the line and need help..

I have built PC's before so that is not a problem.

If you build one yourself, you can get a good rig with that money.

Off the top of my head,

gigabyte p45 DS3-R/L mobo

4gb g.skill ddr2 1066mhz ram

HD 4870 video card

500gb seagate barracuda harddrive

Intel E8400 CPU

xigamatek S1283 cooler

corsair 650-700-750w PSU

at USA prices that should add up to around $800 give or take $15 or so. Now if you look around for some deals/instant-mailin rebates/etc, you could probably cut that down to $750

However you mentioned your funds in Pounds so I cant say if prices are the same in england.

If you must cut down on something, look into the intel E7400 CPU, HD 4850 or 9800GTX+ video cards, or a somewhat cheaper mobo (current one is around $120) that doesnt have 2 x PCIEx16 slot, or say a 320gb drive instead of 500gb, or just 2gb ram instead of 4gb if you currently sport something like a 17inch @ 1280x1024 res.
