thanks alot for that review that helps me out alot. the guy there said that the CPU was the bottle neck. He had the 1.6GHz CPU if i got the 2.0Ghz C2D would the games run noticeably better?
and will i have to buy the better version from gateway or can i get a lower end cpu version from best buy and ugrade the CPU later?
alright the version i am looking at has a 1.8Ghz CPU, if i just turn the resolution down and take off things like AA do you think i will get at a steady 30 FPS in the CPU demanding games?jon9o4Yes, its the screen resolution that will kill you but, with AA turned down and maybe like 2 settings turned to medium you should be able to play at full resolution with a nearly maxed out game with no AA. Don't get me wrong, your game's wont be chugging at 10 frames or anything like that, the worst I believe you'll experience is probably around 22-23 and that would be trying to max out assassin's creed. C&C 3 maxed should run ATLEAST at a steady 29-32 with this laptop.
this is one question that has always been in my mind though...
if this laptop can handle thoughs games that are out now for the 360 and PS3 wont it be able to handle any game that comes out for the 360 or PS3 that is also for the PC?
jon9o4
Not necessarily. The reason that console games look almost on par with PC games these days (outside of games like Crysis) is because of the optimization capable when a developer knows that every single person buying the game has the same hardware.
The laptop could be unable to play new games by Christmas, you don't know, its the PC gaming gamble.
make that SCDA not SC:DA loljon9o4
No, you will not play Splinter Cell Double Agent because Ubisoft doesn't want you to. To make sure you can't play it, they filled it with bugs and glitches and optimized it so poorly it will run like a slide show....
But you'll play everything else great! :)
That's a very good laptop, but why are you paying $1700? Best Buy has the exact same thing for $1349 and it's available in store!

Gateway just wants you to pay for crapware and overlong warrenties. (2 years is all you need, the laptop will only last you gaming wise for 3 at the most).
hahahah sorry, im not buying it for $1700 or $1800 or whatever from gateway. I was just using that link to show the laptop. if i do get that laptop i will be buying from bestbuy because that one comes with 4gigs of RAM and a 320 gig Hard drive.
someone mentioned that it will last about 2 years for gaming. do you really think so? or would that be with using lower settings?

Lets put it this way, I bought a gaming laptop similar to yours-the XPS M1710 2 years ago. It had the same exact processor as the one in your Gateway, 1GB of RAM, and a 256mb 7900GS. Both the 8800M GTS and 7900GS are second string high end moble cards, the 7900GS answering to the 7900GTX, and the 8800 GTS answering to the GTX. Don't get me wrong, they're both still amazing cards compared to everything else at their respective time period. When I first got my laptop, the big graphics whore was Oblivion, and I could run it at 1440x900 on high, as which you'll be doing with Crysis, only at 1024x800. A year later, I was running most games at medium high(S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2...). Now, 2 years later, I run new games at medium at 1440x900, or on high at 800x600. I run Crysis on medium at 1024x800 with 25-30fps. So now you see where I'm going, about every year, you'll drop a performance level-the first year you play on high, the second on medium, the third on low and it's time to upgrade. Works the same way with desktops, there are few people using 6800GT's happily, mosst have upgraded. But you can't(well, you can, but only license Gateway parts, and I doubt they'll support your laptop in 3 years, Dell isn't supporting mine anymore, all I can upgrade to is the 7900GTX). So, depending on what settings you're comfortable with, your laptop will last you gaming wise anywhere from 2-4 years. Mines lasted me 2, at the end of this year I'm building a new PC and retiring my laptop to mobile operations and office work.
i see i see, thanks alot. i think it would be sweet to get this gaming laptop, cause being able to take my gaming station anywhere would be sweet. My only other option would be to get a low level Dell laptop for $700 at bestbuy and get a 360 for gaming... but i cant take a 360 and tv with me everywhere.jon9o4
No, the gaming laptop comes in handy a lot. I bring it on planes and it sure helped me out when I spent a month in Germany with no other form of English entertainment at night.

agreed laptops are my friend less powerful but still amazingI love my 6860FX. It runs everything I throw at it.
However, its not a real laptop, but merely a desktop replacement. It might have an hour and a half of battery life.
