Hello fellow gamers,

I recently upgraded to a brand new PC (quad core intel, 4 gigs of ram, Nvidia 9500 512mb...running vista x64) that is quite game capable, and I am looking for a good game to buy. Since my budget is quite limited, I am looking for something a tad bit older than crysis and friends.

I've done quite a lot of research and i'm pretty much down to 2 options at this point : Gears of war - or - Oblivion.

I do love RPGs but never played any of the elder's scroll's franchise, and I just barely looked at the Gears of War for Xbox360, which I find quite impressive graphically.

I cant decide upon one or the other, and I stopping by BestBuy tonight to get one or the other.

Any ideas what I should do?

Thanx!

Da.Chisel

Ugh. What a horrible choice. If you absolutely have to pick one of those two, I'd say go for Oblivion. It's by far the better of the two, but I can't say that I would really want to recommend either game to anyone.

I haven't played gears of war and I don't have any interest to. It may therefore come as no surprise that I would recommend Oblivion out of the two. It's not a good rpg, but it will keep you entertained for quite some time, Especially if you install mods to fix up the, what you will eventually discover to be, disappointing and shallow gameplay.

why not? they are both great games...hence the great reviews?

If i had to choose I would go for Oblivion, simply becasue it a great story and is a huge game, the combat does get repetitive and the caves and forts also get very samey after a while

its one of few PC games that actually benefited from a simultaneous console release, unlike Thief3 and Deus Ex

If you haven't played any of the previous Elder Scroll games, then jumping into Oblivion won't be a let down, like it was for those that really enjoyed Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (and the expansions).

If you want a fast paced action shoot 'em up games, then pick up Gears of War

Thank you kind people who answered :)

Up until now, no-one seems to care about Gears of War. I should have guessed that my post would have tipped heavily on one side or the other, and I now have my answer.

The only remaining issue is that it seems that alot of people here and there on the net are having problems with Oblivion on Vista (worst on 64 than on 32), and Bethesda clearly says that they will not support Vista. There are some fixes posted on their forums, but I am afraid that I will encouter issues with the game on my machine.

Anybody out there have a similar rig running oblivion?

Honestly I wouldve chose Gears of War.

Thats such a sick game. Its full of action and intense combat. All around an awesome game. Multiplayer is decent too.

Those games are for the 360. Save up some money and get a pc game better than them both.

It depends on what type of game you like more methinks. I love third person shooting with a cover system but Gears of War isn't that long of a game and I don't think it's worth $50...or $40. I don't know how much it costs these days.

Oblivion will last a lot longer and there are many, many mods. The community is very strong. Plus there is an expansion and it'll probably cost $50 all together. Honestly, I got tired of Oblivion. I spent around 80 hours on it, and didn't bother with the expansion or the newer mods. Every now and then, I reinstall it using the latest cool mods but I stop playing after a few hours.

As was previously posted...it really depends on which you like more? RPGs or Shooting, action games?

But, if I were you, I would get TES IV: Oblivion. Because:

1. Oblivion lasts MUCH longer.

2. I beat gears of war in less than 5 hrs...

3. With all the Player Modifications, Oblivion will always have something to offer you.

If you do decide to get Oblivion, I can give you a couple of websites for Player Mods & I can recommend some to you. Just send a message on your decision.

Oblivion has much much more replayability. GoW for PC absolutely sucks imo, the games strong points are on online with co-op. Since GoW PC online is really small (Last I heard) it wouldn't be a great choice.

If I had to pick 1 over the other I'd pick Oblivion. I'm not sure how well Gears would run with that video card to be perfectly honest.

this is a really, really close competition! two very mediocre games - which is better? i'm going to go with gears of war, because at least i was able to finish the game, while i've yet to go beyond the first town in oblivion, despite many, many, many attempts to get into the game.

:o you'd rate Oblivion as mediocore...if you find it that difficult to do the first town; then just do what most people do...cheat to complete...and when done just deactivate cheats...that's what I had to do (after around 20-40 attempts).

GoW was wwwwwaaaaaayyyyyyy to easy...on all of the difficulty levels. I hope GoW2 will be more challenging. And I hope TES V will be a bit less difficult.

You misread what JnWycliffe wrote. It states the he's yet to get past the first town because he can't get into the game, not that it's difficult.

It would be like people talking up The Office TV series to you, and after you finially decide to watch an episode, you just don't care for it.....yet you try to watch a few more episodes and still nothing happens to make you like it. JnWyc has tried Oblivion many times, but he just can't get into the game.

how can they be mediocre when they got great reviews? i dont get it

Reviews are the opinions of individuals (or to be more accurate, reviews are the opinions of the corporate parents of the media outlet for which the individual writing the review works), and no one opinion (and by that rationale, any number of opinions) can be any more or less legitimate that any other opinion. In other words, no one opinion is "right", and regardless of how many opinions join in that choir, their song is no more legitimate than anyone else's.

In other words, reviews aren't "right" and they don't prove that a game is good, they're just the opinion of some guy. For instance, if JnWycliffe worked for GameSpot and was a well respected reviewer, and had scored Oblivion a 4/10, would your reaction be that he/she/it is correct and the game is therefore bad? Or would your reaction be that the majority says it is good, and the majority is always right? Or would your head explode due to conflicting opinions because it is your belief that all reviews (opinions of individuals) are right? Or would you perhaps make up your own mind regardless of what reviewers think?

How can you reconcile differing opinions without accepting that opinions carry relevance only for the people who agree with that opinion? And by extension, how can you reconcile that without accepting that the opinions of the guys who work professionally for media outlets are no more valid to those who disagree with them than anyone else's?

For instance, GameSpot rated the PS3 version of Mercenaries 2 a 5/10, while IGN scored it a 7.9. Who is right?

This post was funded by the JnWycliffe is too lazy to write his/her/its own replies association.

i never said i found oblivion to be too difficult; i said that i couldn't get into it, specifically because i found the combat boring, the rpg elements lackluster, and npcs bland and not worth talking to (the mini-game is just absolutely ridiculous).

I would've suggested Gears of War, but since you already made your choice, I'll just give you a little tip before playing Oblivion. Don't play Oblivion until you download some 100+ mods. Trust me, vanilla Oblivion is horrible. But with enough mods, the game can be half decent.

Neither games are that great. If I had to pick, I'd choose Oblivion. You can atleast fix it to a playable degree with mods.

i say oblivion... gears of war campaign is really good...the multiplayer makes up for it... it has a fairly big online community....but if you have never played oblivion..get it..but then again it depends what u like..if you prefer an rpg ..get oblivion... if u want action get gears..(OBLIVION WITH MODS OFCOURSE)

download this mod..its a must!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francesco's Leveled creatures-items mod

Tired that nearly all creatures level up with you? Bored that at level 25 every bandit of the world are god-like ones with daedric equipment?
Then this mod is for you. I think that the game has to be challenging but that not every fight has to be an epic one. This mod aims to create a more realistic and enjoyable experience, it will not make the game easier, just more credible (it actually can make it harder depending on the parts you decide to install)
This mod changes nearly all the creatures lists to make them more static. Even if you will still find very strong stuff at high levels you will often (for example) find normal skeletons and zombies in dungeons, wolves and imps in the wilderness and so on.. not every bandit will level up with you but some of them will be static.. I also changed most leveled items lists, in vanilla oblivion at say level 20 you used to find only high level armors and weapons and low-mid stuff nearly disappeared from the game, now it will be much harder to find high lev equipment, and low-mid lev one will still be common later in the game.
One of the strenghts of this mod is it's modular nature.. every part of the mod is optional and you are able to customize it to your taste during the installation.
The optional parts cover many things like guards (all guards used to keep leveling up with you, so no matter how strong you were they were always a bit stronger than you. Using this part of the mod, while some guards still level up with you, many of them will stop at about levels 15-25. Stronger guards will usually defend more important places/people), vendors (you used to find chainmail/dwarven mithril/orcish armors and weapons in creatures/npcs loot before seeing their appearance in shops, this made armor/weapons vendors nearly useless after reaching level 6-7, now you will find those stuff in shops many levels before but at increased prices), new unique enemies/bosses (a small chance to find stronger unique bosses with names and personalized combat ****/loot), more enemies (more creatures/npcs in dungeons, aviable in three variants) houses/dungeons chests (improved, more interesting, diverse and often more rewarding but still balanced loot), quests (tweaked main and guilds quests to make late quests harder for unexperienced characters, forcing to level up so you can't become master of the fighters guild at lev 8 ), arena (later ranks will be much harder for weak chars so you can't win it with a low lev character) and much much more (read the full readme for a complete list with detailed info).
There's also an items add-on which adds a ton of new top quality user made weapons and armors to my loot lists and a creatures add-on adding many quality user made creatures.
The mod also provides very detailed in game customizability features.. via an easy to use in game menu you are able to change lots of settings in a couple of clicks. Check the right section in this readme for more info on in game customziability.

Thanx all :)

Very constructive comments for the most part. I have made my decision and bought both :)

Did'nt try Oblivion yet, but I will soon. Gears of war took FOR_FRIGGIN_EVER to install on my machine, but in the end, it turns out to be working really good on high settings.

Up until now, I am impressed by the graphics and the intense firefights. But the damn Microsoft Live Games thingy is so broken it's not even funny. Cant seem to be able to login with an account, but that's MS for ya :)

Thanx everyone, I will make sure to consult you wise people in my future dilemas.

Well if you are tight on money and have a while to wait before you can buy your next game I'd say go with Oblivion as it is huuuuge and will eat up your life :)
On the other hand, Gears is a really good fun shooter (not played on PC though - you might have to pay for the 360 controller to get the proper experience = more money) and the onlne is pretty good too.

Hard to decide really - Oblivion will last you longer and is less repetative seeing as it's an open enviroment and you can play as different kinda of characters. Infact Ijusy answered my own question - Oblivion
