Is it worth upgrading to a 480 from a 8800GT. I play at 1920x1200 resolution so my GPU can get pretty stressed in some games. Are there better video cards out there worth the price? Sorry, I'm not very up to date on the latest hardware - I took a break from gaming for a while.

Thanks for any advice that you can give.

in some ways it is, in some ways its not. look at his profile picture. i would get a 480, it is the strongest single gpu on the market.

The only problem of the 480 is the high power consumption and heat. I suggest you buy a card like the HD 5850 or 5870 and save your money.

Since it hasn't been mentioned here yet, GTX 480 is also extremely loud. Unless you have a jet engine grade sound-proof case, don't get it.

I don't think we will see new games that will actually require such monstrous performance other than poorly optimized console games.

not to mention the gtx 480 is a real sweaty power hog.. this thing generates significant heat.. i imagine if you could get one and a pentium D in the same room your pc would burst into flames :P

to initiate even a 2 card sli or indipendaant 2 card physix setup you need 1000 watt psu or better :P

the 480 isnt worth it.. personnaly i dont think it will ever be worth it..

this time mon ami team green made a lemon of a gpu.. it stutters and coughs in order to get the job done... and no one wants to get sick.

For the rez your playing at a 5870/50 would be the best choice and you would save money. Unless your in a cold climate and you need a portable heater then stay away from the 480. Your electric bill will also be lower and you won't need earplugs either.

I have read that the 480 is a very hot beast and that fact along with the resolution i play at swayed me away from it and i got the 470 instead. The 470 doesn't run that hot atleast not for me anyway max it went under load was about 69C which isn't great but not awful either. So try not to label the all 400 cards stupidly hot.

you know the Geforce 500's or 600's will kick butt like the 8000's-9000's

i play both the red and green team. and they play us (like sports, governments, religion, news, women, bosses, family, TV, mac/PC, cars, car repair, fast food, slow food,)

life's a game play it or be played!

If the gtx480 gets some revised/refreshed versions then it would be an excellent choice... (If they took care of the power consumption, heat and noise outpus)

The performance will prolly increase some on the refresh/revisions. Along with more modern, up-to-date drivers designed for these cards..

But until then gtx4## series is nothing special, and is actually a very big letdown due to those problems I just mentioned.

Get a 470 and OC it too match the 480, and it doesn't run that hot, just leave the fan speed at 50-60%.

Its not power hungry either, both 4xx downclock themselves when it isn't being stressed, or used. It downclocks from 610 core, to about 30-35, and barely uses any power. And since the 197.45 drivers, its only 2000 points (3d mark vantage)behind the 5870.

You could try crossfire 5850s or crossfire 5870s instead

I went from 2 9800GTX+ to a GTX480 and i'm loving it.

It's not any louder than the stock fans on my old 9800GTX+ and as for been to hot i have yet to see it go over 86c, possible it does but everytime i checked after intense games it was dropping.

Only issue i have with it was the price.

The GTX 470 uses more power at idle and under load than the 5870, and it's slower. 2000 points in 3dmark vantage is not a particularly small amount either.

IMO the performance of the 480 is completely offset by the power consumption, heat, and cost. I would just get a 5870 instead and put the money you saved into an ssd fund or something.

Ok, I should have said it was 5000 points, when it had the 197.41 drivers, the 197.75 actually brought it up 3000 points, and I don't consider that too bad with its 2nd set of drivers.

i just replaced my dead ati card with a 470 gtx and it rocks, easy overclock and in some games it gets higher framerates than my 5870 did... room temp 70f card idles at 40c and under load 75c... Fan setting at 50-65%, over 75% the temps fall even further but it sounds like a jet engine.

My top advice would be to invest in a single 5870. It'll do you justice for a very, very long time.

SkyWard20, what CPU do you have? Maybe it would be a better investment in grabbing something as a HD5850 and upgrade the CPU :)

A Q6600 (2,4Ghz). But is the card worth the price? Is is significantly better than its competitor's new line of video cards to warrant the purchase? I'm not a fanboy, but I'm used to buying Nvidia products myself.

Benchmark software doesnt mean anything to me. Its game performance that cuts the mustard :P
