Hi, I'm configuring my PC on dell.com and I've chosen a 256 mb 8600 GTS for my video card. Since the IntelĀ® CoreTM 2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB) will cause me to go above budget, I was wondering how much of a difference would it make if i used some of the cheaper processors? The cheaper ones are: -

IntelĀ® CoreTM2 Duo Processor E6600 (4MB L2 Cache,2.4GHz,1066 FSB)

IntelĀ® CoreTM2 Duo Processor E6700 (4MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB)

Since this is a new PC i hope to run the newer games coming out at least on medium settings...what do you think?

Either of the processors listed will run all games niecly for a while, but the Q6600 is the equivalent of two E6600s working together, so Id say thats worth the extra cash!

Also, you might wanna drop down to the 8600GT if possible, the difference between performance is small and not worth the difference in price. (Spend the cash saved on the Q6600 ;))

I would say stick with the Quad-core, the GFX card will be easy to upgrade and less of a pain in the future.

Allright...I guess Quad core it is.. :)

But about the 8600 series...Does the GT really not make much of a difference compared to the GTS?

And should I be looking at some other card besides the 8600 series..?

For the price you pay for the GTS...there is minimal gain from the GT. Just save the money and get the 8600 because that should deliver medium-high settings.

If you can afford it, go for a 8800 series, they are MUCH better. If not, you may be better off getting a high end DX9 card.

Ah...but I was thinking of upgrading to 8800 maybe late next yr. I was hoping that the 8600 would keep me occupied till then...

The Quad Core will be fine for the 8800 if im not mistaken?

$400?

The price difference between an E6600 and Q6600 is around $20 on newegg, and probably $100 on Dell.
Further, when more processor intensive games come out (such as SupCom: Forged Alliance), you'll need a quad core to keep the game from crawling to 10 FPS.

OP, is it not possible for you to build your own? It's not that hard and if you get stuck, you can come here for help or post on the Custom Build PC Union (the link is in my sig).

You'll save a tonne on the video card and CPU, that's for sure.

State your budget and I'll see what I can list for you.

It's a piece of cake.

You literally just follow the manual included in the motherboard.
