Is it worth it to purchase one of these for a new desktop? The other 8800's have more RAM but is it really necessary to have about 340MB's of video RAM?

Ummm... 320 isn't too much, but they are also a ton faster than anything from the last generation and they have dx10.

Actually it has 512mb of memory. It's just using some of it for some memory buffing stuff.

the reviews on toms hardware and also the info on most websites shows both the 320 and 640 are exactly the same except for amount of memory.if you feel you need 640 and have the money then get it otherwise save some and get the 320.either way you get more memory capacity than the last gen cards had.if you get the 320 you have less chips to cool with heatsinks if you use them that is.it also matters if you play at high res to get more memory.

What I would do... if you have the money for a 640... buy the 320, save up a bit more, then SLI another 320 in there a couple of months down the road. SLI = kick a single 640's ass...

Unless you want to run games at super high res, the 320mb version is fine.
