I am about to purchase a new laptop, and wanted some advice.

The build i am thinkong of buying is a Dell Inspiron 9400, with an Intel Core 2 duo T7200 2.0ghzz processor,  2gigs of 667MHz DDR2 Ram, 5400rpm HDD and a 256 DDR3 Nvidia Geforce Go 7900.

I am wondering what games this will play, and at what sort of performance level, i've been out of the PC gaming market since Half Life 2 came out, which, as my confusion seems to tell me, is  a reasonably long time.

Firstly though, please don't deviate to a different topic, with suggestions such as "Wait and buy a DX 10 card' etc etc, as i need this laptop now, for my final college media project as my old lappy broke down and is irreperable.

My options are that graphics card, or for a cheaper overall build, the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 with 256 Hypermemory.

Which games do you think those cards will play with that build, and which do you think is the better purchase? Considering the Geforce puts the price of the laptop up by about £150.

Thanks all.

So i should be fine to ply Half Life 2, Quake 4 and Doom 3 on high/max settings then? Those are the only really demanding games i have, although i plan to pick up Oblivion, that should run medium settings right?

Also, do you think this setup would run S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl?

Thanks for the info.

Should be more then enough to play those games, except for the last one. That won't run at high specs at all, but I think you can at least play it. I had a 7800GS and it ran HL2, Q4 and D3 very good.

Thank you very much :3

Also, i'm not expecting it to run well, Stalker, but it would be a dream if it could run it at least, i've been looking forward ot that game for years, and dont have a desktop to play it on anymore.

I call BS on that statement. Supreme Commander, Call of Juarez, and Oblivion do not run well on true "medium settings" on that GPU.

To the OP: The 7900GS will run everything well on med to high settings depending on what screen you get.

That's good specs for a laptop, and the 7900GS should last a while.

Those specs are nearly identical to my Inspiron 9400, although I bought mine last summer so I only have a Core Duo. The 7900GS is quite a nice card for a laptop.

This page gives a general comparison of the mobile graphics cards. 3DMark performance isn't everything but it's someplace to start - and very few sites benchmark mobile cards.

Basically, the X1400 is not a particularly fast card, scoring 900 3DMarks compared to the 7900GS's 3800.

i have an ATI Mobility X345 and i could run half life 2 on med settings, if you get a 7900GS that will run the games on high most likely. defiently go for the 7900 GS.

Awesome, thanks for the help people, i've ordered the laptop, with the 7900 gs :)

Thanks for the info, i'm glad to know it can at least run Half Life 2, which means all my old games will be fine (Vampire Bloodlines, Painkiller, Splinter Cell 3 etc etc)

And if it can run Oblivion on max, then heck, this cards gonna impress me :D

Hopefully it will run Stalker, im not holding my breath for anything better though.

depends really on what resolution you play at, although if its a lappy its not gonna be ultra high res what screen size has it got, and what resolution is that, just out of interest?

17 inch (I wanted the 15inch, but thats not part of the options for it anymore) at 1440x900, i couldnt afford the upgraded 1920x1200.

Also, tentative question, Bioshock on this setup? Opinions?

Because you are gaming at a WXGA+ resolution, you will get good FPS because there is less to render. However, I would always keep your AA maxed to reduce jaggies at that lower rez.

A 7900GS will run the games you listed easily on high/max, I would see if you can switch to a 7200RPM HDD too...

The monitors max res is 1440x900 widescreen, so that or smaller to improve performance.

Probably smaller than that to get the best performance especially in Bioshock. In STALKER, since it's a very scalable engine, you could probably play around with the settings and get decent performance at 1440*900

Awesome, i will probably try to find a demo (or borrow/download it for test purposes only) to see whether the graphical difference between my laptop and the 360 version is enough of a gap to convince me to play it on the analogue sticks instead of a mouse.

But everything else should run pretty much max at 1440x900 with that setup right?

In Bioshock ? Perhaps. But one thing is certain: the 7900GS is a very capable card that should run games well into 2008.
