german pc gamers were in up in arms as it were over bf3 and origin. photos and video's psoted on the internet showed proof of origin gathering user data illegally and violating german privacy laws. it got even worse when (after careful reading) german pc gamers discovered that the EULA for origin contained clauses which claimed that by agreeing they could violate german privacy laws.

So they'll be "spying" on my gaming habits and browsing habits, or what? I'm too lazy to read it because quite frankly, I don't give a damn. They aren't gonna plant spyware or viruses on my PC, nor will they steal my CC info or bring down my computer.

Or is everyone up in arms again because they think Origin is gonna find their porn folder and tell everybody what it contains?

Hmmm...I read it and still don't give a ****. I mainly use my computer for games and bittorrent and that is it so if they want to fill up their databases with mindless info well let them.

well basically if your phone was plugged in to yoru pc they could get a hold of your phone data as well as your phonebook and facebook info.

they were also gathering browsing history and a number of other things.

for "marketing purposes" (they were probably also selling it to marketing agencies)

Good to hear the Germans are standing up to this rubbish unlike other territories it seems (it's also a plus that the German PC maket is huge). Hopefully the Germans can force EA to do a re-think of this intrusive client.

Didn't find anything worth mentioning, except this for the terribly insecure that are despite all the challenges and obstacles among us here on this internet.

Q: Will my Origin games or entitlements ever expire?

The Origin terms of service are designed to protect against misuse of the Origin system. No Origin user who has paid entitlements and/or downloaded games will have their account cancelled or games expired due to extended non-use. The term regarding account cancellation for non-use is designed to guard against creation of non-active accounts for inappropriate reasons.

Funny you should mention phones ionusx, I wonder why would Origin check for the phones Origin users use, I bet it's not for the mobile platform they want to release.

This is a good thing. Maybe EA will stop force us to use Origin :DDarkblueNinja

Maybe Steam will also do that, maybe, just maybe, it's been more than a few years since it was made, but just maybe.

I don't care as long my swtor pre order goes through just fine during early access and launch day and activates my BF3 retail copy that I'm getting at Bestbuy this Friday. Plus I only use my rig for gaming and watch Netflix.

Proof?

The whole argument from what I've seen is based on people wrongly interpreting Sysinternal's Process Monitor.

Origin goes through your files, but to check if you already have Origin games installed. It doesn't actually *read* any of the non-game files, it looks for specific ones to check whether certain games are installed.

This post explains it nicely.

Just installed that extra useless piece of software, verdict? Origin has one single process, itself, Steam has two...oh the agony that is Origin, what it scans your PC the first time you install it? madness...I guess it's just like Steam, Desura, Impulse and others then.

well like its very simple.. you have stolen data from a few thousand people centralized in 1 place. JC since the first time some company has gotten caught doing this theyve been giving the gathered data to other people for a price. facebook did it, onstar did it, a few gps makers and nokia have been caught doing this with their phones. and now your telling me that somehow ea is innocent of this? ninja prease

Why do people keep on comparing Origin with Steam? NO, it's not the same thing! Steam very clearly asks you if you will let it scan your pc and send over the info.

Stop comparing the 2 already.

Althout people are not even sure what exactly Origin "reads". Apparently someone found it even scans tax data, and that is just a little bit too much.
Personally I'm not really interested in EA games right now so I don't really have to think about this whole mess.

For those concerned about Origin and it finding your dirty porn, just sandbox it. Apparently it's effective.

Speaking as someone that uses that fairly often, agreed. I noticed that Origin picks up any Origin-able games, I hadn't thought about how it does it. Once again, simple lie > complicated truth. :(

Some people don't care about "this sweet game" as much as you do. To me it looks just like another generic boring military shooter.

It's actually quite funny how people keep bringing this argument up, as if this was the only good game on the planet.

it's the principle of allowing a company to have unrestricted access to your system. i cant work out if youre being deliberately obtuse or you're just naive.

if origin just scans for games installed then thats not too bad but if they scan for other things to assist in marketing then thats a step too far.

until we know the extent of their search algorithims and the data they collect i think pc gamers have every right to speak out against it. if we dont voice our opinion now then where will it end? it's called a personal computer for a reason

That's the thing though, we don't have any proof either way. I doubt EA is going to shed some light on this either.

I'm glad the German gamers are speaking out against this. Just shows to big name companies you can't get away with everything.
