hello, as per the topic this is my dilemma right now. Had positive experiences with both my 9600GT and then a 4890. Less positive experience with a sapphire 5870, mainly driver related issues. Hence wanting to go back to Nvidia now. Still the fact that ATI are releasing the 6 series soon has put me off buying a 480 just yet. Don't really know the specs or prices for the 6 series so hard to judge. Also ATI? I mean despite their success with the 5 series, will they ever be the superior brand over Nvidia?

From looking at the specs of the 6870 and 6850, they looked be very much re-branded 5xxx cards.

That's kinda my fear, does anyone have any useful info regarding pricing and spec of the 6 series cards? in a way I could compare to the 480.

Also does anyone know when Nvidia intend on releasing their next set of cards. I know a 495 (dual gpu) is planned for December.

the 6870 isnt the high end though, it is mid range. the 6970 and 6990 are the high end this time around, both single cards the 6970 is supposed to be more powerful than a gtx 480/ sli 460s and the 6990 is supposed to be around or beat out crossfire 5970

Why don't you just wait and see how the new 6xxx series from ATI turns out?

Yes I suppose I will, also I've been reading about the 580 and possibly the 495 in December. I'm just incredibly tempted to grab a 480 now and if the 6970 isn't a significant increase over the 480 at roughly the same price then there is little point in me waiting. Likewise for the 580. I don't really want to spend over £400 for a single Gcard. So if the 6970/580 are going to be considerably more than that then I would consider buying now. Although I suppose the 480 will see a significant price drop once those cards come out.

I would wait, mostly because it should lower the prices of other cards, possibly the 480 GTX.

no 495 hahaha

there is no dual gpu response from nvidia planned :P the mars II was canned and galaxy's 470 dual gpu was also canned :P. their refresh is the gtx 580 (also known as the rebadge kfa gtx 480 anarchy), a gtx 570 with some more shaders, the gts 455, and a dual gf104 card which basically means it could only be a gts 455 dual gpu or gts 450.. both of which underpreform against a 5970 let alone the 6990 later this year.

the pricing will sit fairluy nicely actually.

the hd 6870 (equivalent to a gtx 470) will fetch about 225-230 ish at refrence, the 6850 (equivalent to a gtx 460 w/ factory oc) sits at 190ish both of which will be ready for oct 22nd meybe a week afterwords.

the hd 6950-6970 wont be ready until next month after which will come the 6700 series going down culminating with the hd 6990 for early january. the hd 6000 series essentially only make trying to rule the high end worse for nvidia by trumping their every move up their thus far with jsut as good (or better) gpu's for cheaper prices than what nvidia can do without cannablizing their low end market.

In a few weeks, I'm either getting a 6000 or a 5850, either one is enough for 1080p gaming.

You do realize you're comparing a flagship to a refresh don't you? The HD 6870 is not going to be the flagship of the 6k series, but a refresh (not to be confused with a re-brand). The HD 6970 will be the single-core flagship. If you want to the skip core-count technicality and compare single cards you should compare the GTX 480 to the HD 5890 and soon the HD 6990.

I was thinking of going SLI again with some GTX 460s 1gb, but I decided no, not multi-gpu again, multiple reasons... Noise, heat, wider support.

So I was thinking I will just hold off and wait for AMD's new hd 69 series card, Hopefully a hd6970 (if it is a decent price and under 10.5 inches long) if not, maybe a hd6950..

It will be still a good few months before I could even begin to get one of them anyway, and by then plenty of benchmarks, in-game performance comparisons to other cards, etc will be already out for us to view. Maybe even a slight price reduction, but highly doubtful, unless Nvidia releases something not too long after.

Probably the only reason why I would switch to ATi and be back on the red team again. I love the eyefinity setup.

You can run multiple monitors with Nvidia as well ( 2D & 3D Surround) though you will need an SLI setup. As for TC, it isn't going to hurt and wait to see what the 6000 series does in performance. It may even cause the 480 to drop in price some (though that isn't a guarantee).

It's just amazing how much confusion ATI are spreading with this new naming scheme. Half the people in this thread have no idea that the 6870 and 6850 are successors to the 5770 and 5750. The real competition comes with the 6970 and 6950.

Yeah, I agree. This naming scheme is awful. I think it's worse than Nvidia's re-branding fiasco from the last couple of years.

How hard would it be to just call the midrange cards "6700 series," and the new high-end stuff "6800?" That would clearly indicate to most users where the products stand in relation to their last 2 or 3 generations of GPUs.

My spider sense is telling me that the 6xxx series will have bad drivers lacking opengl support and a bunch of manufacturers each pointing fingers at a graphics designer that simply doesn't give a hoot about anything except money.

amrite? what did I win? Do I get an achievement?

nooooooooooooo... but I'm right all the same.

As opposed to my GTX 280's horrid drivers? i can name 4 friends who had nvidia cards and were unable to play openGL games whatsoever. Not to mention i have had 3 faulty Nvidia cards compared to 1 faulty ATI card. AMD drivers have always been better than nvidia in my experience, no contest.

I've had the complete opposite ferret. Have had so many people call me months after a build saying they got a random bsod or screen colors going crazy. Was always a AMD/ATI driver problem. I've always had to find a driver that would work specifically for a ATI card well. Don't even get me on ATI driver updating and files not installing causing all kinda error post. Its all in personal experience though. I had 15 people go crazy and call me after the nvidia fan driver fiasco... So many 8800/9800 gt and gts 250 lost in that few days. In the end, problems can arise of both sides. Personally though, i've had way more issues from customers on the AMD/ATI side of things in the years then nvidia.

Only time I remember a really bad driver issues was with a friend's nVidia 7800GT, and I've been using ATi exclusively for 8 years with no issues. Ever.

I'm not trying to say nVidia sucks, but that all this BS about one having better drivers than the other is all encompassing BS. Drivers for both manufacturers work. Despite what any of you have to say on the contrary your bad experiences are isolated from the majority. Before you dispute that notice the key word "majority."

For every unsatisfied customer there are probably well over 100 satisfied customers. People are less likely to post satisfaction than dissatisfaction.

If a companies computer peripherals didn't work they wouldn't sell. Simple as that.

Too bad that last line doesn't seem to apply to some other types of products. VW's and Audis, for example.. They sell, they look nice, they're nice to drive, but they're junk.
