My parents are buying a new desktop, but since they don't know jack about computers, they asked me to help them pick out the hardware. Now this will be a shared computer, so after missing out on about 5 years of PC gaming (haven't played a PC game since Battlefield 2 was the newest ****) I'm thinking I should make it good enough to be a gaming PC. All the parts will be picked out seperately, but I don't know anything about PC hardware anymore. Can you guys suggest a good, cheap setup? I'm not even sure about a budget for this thing. Thanks.

Well I'd like to stay below $1000. But really my parents want a good computer that'll run for a while. Living in China we have had some pretty terrible computer experiences.

for $100, you should get a Radeon 5870 and a Phenom II 955.

I like it, but dump the Sargas and add another 2GB of memory, The OP wants a system that'll last 5 years. A single core Sempron will hardly hold a candle on basic tasks nowadays, let alone games.

Ok, so with the new budget what should I go for? I'm looking at stuff on newegg, but I don't know what stuff is compatible with each other.

Thanks for the kind words, buddy. If you weren't so blinded by your fanboyism you would've seen that I've posted Intel based system suggestions before.

Why did I choose an AMD setup? Because an i7 is unattainable at this price point, and because an i5 will have no worthwhile upgrade future above what an i7 860 has to offer. If you think otherwise, feel free to post a build suggestion. But keep this in mind; the OP asked for help, not for a troll....

that build isn't that bad but if your giving him 2 gpu's as 5850's from what i can see i think 650 or 750 might be a better choice if he's going to crossfire on top of that the ram isn't that bad but Ram with a low Cas latency wouldn't hurt either :)

Yeah but i think that 600W can handle 2 5850's as they need very less power :) and yeah low cas latency is good but the budget dosent let me choose one :(

thats understandable but he still does have other components that are going to be using power also, and yes i do agree they use lower wattage but 600w is kinda pushing it at least imo.

NLahren
would take big tower to have enough place for 2 gfx cards and to avoid heat problems

HAF 922 is meant for extreme build buddy..... it will easily hold both of them and it has awesome air flow and that shouldn't be a problem :)

[QUOTE="X360PS3AMD05"]Intel i5 only because i know the fanboys here will all recommend Phenom II.............Neo_revolution7

But keep this in mind; the OP asked for help, not for a troll....

what do u actually mean by unattainable when reffering to i7?? just a question by the way

At the $1000 price point, the OP would have to forgo a high-end video card to allow for the i7 in his/her budget.

Doesent matter on the size of a PC case :) Smaller PC cases Exhaust heat faster a CM690 for instance could run tri SLI (Done it) and still be within limits and its alot smaller than the 922, i only noticed a drop in temps ( 1 - 5c ) with a bigger case (COSMOS S GRRRR!) :( That was when i had my 260's....... and they all died after a power surge...... thats what home insurance is for

I'm not a fanboy, you assume i was even talking about you, and i've been here longer than you.

That's no excuse to post a useless and confusing message. Your above-stated comment had pretty much no purpose other than to incite trouble.

Oh, and being with GS longer gives you the ability to troll?

Tbh if he wants it to last a long time i think he should save up a bit more to about $2000 Very hard to choose parts that will give him what he wants for the price, so many trade offs like he wants an awesome GPU but that wont fit in there etc :)

No one is to blame lol,
