getting a new graphics card please help!!!!!!!

hey guys i wanna buy a new graphic card for my desktop, the last one i bought is the **** 8600gt 256mb 3 years ago

im looking for a good new card thats gonna last me a looooonnnnng time

which one is best in terms of both performance and price???? i don't really have a budget

also my current spec is:

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.00ghz

Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB

Graphics Card: Geforce 8600GT 256mb

so should i upgrade my cpu as well?? and if so what should i get

please leave suggestions thank u so much

also i was hoping to purchase before christmas so it might be cheaper

and the gfx card is for intense gaming, really wanna try out arma 2 and metro 2033

and i was wondering if i should use the 8600gt for sli or physx if possible

also im from sydney, australia

and my monitor is 22 inch with 1600x1050 native resolution and i dont plan to overclock the card

My opinion on the best price/performance deal is the nVidia GTX 460 1GB.

They perform very well and have a lot of overclocking headroom for the average price of $200.

The next best option would be the AMD HD6870 at $240 which has similar performance.

You won't make the same mistake with GTX 460.

hmm it looks like the gtx460 requires at least 450 watts

so it means i will be running it at a minimum right???

does it damage the gtx460 if i decide to keep the current power supply??

I got the GTX 470 and couldn't be happier.

It also came with a Starcraft 2 trial and a Mafia 2 game.

It was kind of expensive, way more than the 460, but I have it overclocked nearly to a 480's performance and it remains under 60 Celcius. (Even at load. My room stays at a constant 70 F and I use wind tunnel systems in my antec 900.)

It also comes with EVGA's lifetime warranty and step up program. (In case something ridiculous comes out and I have to have it.)

My CPU is an OC'ed Q6600 at 3ghz and it never goes about 50 celcius. :D

My ram isn't noteworthy.. been thinking about bumping it up to something nice at 6gbs.

Don't even bother with low power supplies.

Just get a nice corsair or something modular and treat yourself to some amazing cable management. :D

I run a single GTX 470 in my OC rig but I decided to get a 850 Corsair PSU with 80%+ Efficiency because my last one wouldn't run all my fans with my setup.

So glad I upgraded.. last PSU was junk.

If you are interested my buddy has a spare PSU that came out of his Alienware Area-51 that he is selling on Craigslist.

It has 530-550 continuous Watts. (It was labeled at 750 Peak.)

If you want I could ask him if you could buy it from him.

He was wanting to sell it for 50$ and its a Turbo Cool 550W. (Google? :P)

I've read reviews and apparently Turbo Cool is a very worthy brand and has a no-nonsense policy about their PSU's. (Not labeling something at 900W to only have a true Wattage of 500. Remember, Watts = Volts * Amps)

Today on Newegg, and today only..I think, they have a Black November sale going on for 10% off Corsair PSU's and 20% off Antec PSU's.

Might want to go over and check it out.. looks interesting.

hmm my motherboard doesn't support SLI?? i think theres more than 1 slot for gfx card in the back, dammit was hoping of using the 8600gt for physics

msy is best for pc component parts, i'm not sure about laptops but you can get some adequate ones that will do everything but play games from jbhifi. you can probably get some good deals at after xmas sales but its up to you and msy is great but you can't order online you just have to go there. Its quite cheap just google msy and check it out

I have the same psu as you and it only has 1 6pin connector and the 460 needs 2 i think. So you would have no choice but to get a new oneangrules23

That's not necessarily true. He could try his luck with a Molex adapter. He'd be cutting it close to power requirements, but I've had friends that met or were actually "under" requirements and their rigs performed as intended.

I've seen fairly even reviews, but the GTX 260 seems to perform better with DX11 even though it's an older card (and slightly cheaper) - Should I go with 6870 just because it's newer tech?

IMO get the GTX 460 1GB or HD 6850. They're the best cards in the $200 segment right now and they both overclock very well.

Get the GTX 460 if you like raw horsepower, or the HD 6850 if you like the cheaper cost and the fact it doesn't need a very powerful PSU.

The 6870 does outperform the 460 a lot of the time. This is the base clock or slight overclock 460 1gb. If you overclock your 460 it can and will match and sometimes surpass the 6870. If you want to overclock the 6850 or the 460 are the better buys. The reviews for the 6870 vary so look around a little bit, a lot of websites have it close to the 470. Nvidia has apparantly been pulling some strings to get some sites to test oc'ed 460's vs the reference 6870 so make sure to keep an eye for that. I went for the 6870 and absolutely love it.
