Here are your best bets

  • The Orange Box
  • Counter Strike: Source(although it's best to buy it in stores and then install to Steam)
  • Half-Life 1 Anthology
  • Left 4 Dead Game of the Year Edition
  • Valve Complete Pack(buying this saves you $119.83)

Also, if you're creative, get Garry's Mod. If you aren't creative, still get it.

Get Team Fortress 2+Garry's Mod. It is an extra $5 but it's worth it.

Half life 2 is a great game. I would buy Half Life first for $10, and then after you beat that game and when you get another $10 use it to buy HL2 for $20. There are some relatively cheap Valve packs if you're able to spend a bit more than $20, which will give you alot more bang for your buck, but again those will cost you a bit more.

Plants vs zombies won't be satisfying for him. Sure it's a fun indie game, but if he's buying one game then that in no way should be his 'main game'. I would only recommend Plants vs zombies if you've already played many full length games and want some solitaire like game that's great fun as a distraction from time to time. Ridiculous to recommend that to someone who hasn't even played the HL series, and can only buy 1 game.

Well if its one game I would suggest a classic. Half-Life is a great game although ugly as hell these days. After you complete it there are a ton of good mods for the game like They Hunger or Natural Selection.

Nobody mentioned the best deal on steam for someone on a budget. Rome Total War complete has the game with both expansions. For $10, that's a huge hours/money ratio.

Save up a tiny bit more and go for Left4Dead. Heaps of time playing, massive replayability, and get to chat with friends whilst doing it.
And it takes away the anger that can get built up in oneself from work.:D

Nope and the cost is over 20$, because you need HL 2, HL 2 DM and CS 1.6.
