There is no reason to keep STEAM. I can't play CoD, Counter strike, or Day of Defeat. The pings begin at 700 plus. Ridiculus. I imagine that this will only escalate to other games. STEAM no longer has control. They don't seem to update or support. I feel folish having them on my desktop. Can anyone suggest where I might go to get a descent performance from a server?

What are your specs? Are you on a wireless connection? Problems with non-Steam games?

You're not making a lot of sense. Are you saying Steam has been hijacked by the Borg, or are you venting because your connection is sub-par?

So...what seems to be suggested here is that ....all of a sudden....all servers have gone berzerk and neither I nor STEAM are at fault. I have a great PC and STEAM is just an interim. What you smokin'?

Frome the main menu... Go to Steam.... Go to settings... Go to Downloads... look down... try another Download Region.

I'd also check your DSL rate.... problem could be your provider.

My Steam service has been flawless since 2004...and back then, I was on dial-up. The problem you are experiencing is most likely not on Steam's end.

COD multiplayer doesnt even run through steam for starters...but even for the other games, Steam has nothing to do with what Ping you are getting.

This isnt like XBL, Steam games run through dedicaded servers.

Did you actually try to solve the problem? like contacting your ISP? you always make such threads, every week, for the last month or so, contact your ISP it's not THAT hard is it? Steam has nothing to do with your lag, it's either your PC or most likely the internet connection since you complained that all of a sudden all games had crazy pings even 3rd party ones like CoD 2 iirc that have absolutely nothing to do with Steam.

TRY TO FIX YOUR PROBLEMS, nobody will be able to do it for you, we are able to just give advice we can't go into your PC take out your trash and make it work.

What are YOU smokin' you should share some with the rest of us. Steam simply manages your games, it has nothing to do with your ping in multi-player games.

It's funny how many people use Steam as a scape goat for problems on their end. Your ping is exactly that: YOUR ping. Nothing to do with Steam.

Heh... there are worse things to accuse. At least steam has something to do with video games. The OP could have started blaming Microsoft Word, Ipods, Newspapers, or something that isn't even remotely connected to the the internet or gaming (at least not with PC gaming).

Here's a list of what I think.

-Your computer sucks, I can run Steam on a outdated as hell computer (Pentium 4 3.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM, Nvidia 9400GT) while playing Team Fortress 2 under 50 ping.

-Your internet sucks/you have dial-up. I'm running on an Australian connection and I'm having no problems.

-If I interpret 'Call of Duty' as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, that's the problem. Modern Warfare 2 on the PC is notorious for its horrible connectivity.

Right, so i am saying be more polite and you agree with him and quote me instead of him just you can say something to me in order to annoy me .then you say the topic is a complete fail. How about the possibility that the tc honestly does not know that steam is not the problem. Cant you guys inform him about that instead of thinking everything is trolling? Seriously, lets be a bit neutral around these forums. The forums were mainly to help people and you should expect to see both informed and uninformed users asking for help.

No you dont have to, but you dont have to go to thread i posted and quote me while agreeing with someone else either. Neither you have to go to every thread and complain about a thread being "fail" its not like the threads owe you to be good or something. On the other hand i am just asking from people to be polite, maybe the tc does not know what exactly steam does and we should explain it to the tc instead of treating him like somone who intentionally made that thread just to annoy the users of this forum and for no other reason. Serioulsy, people gotta be more open minded. Thats all i am saying.

PEOPLE PLEASE grow up. Listen TC, powercycle your modem and router(if your using one) its easy, to do this unplug the power from the modem and router(if you have one) wait about 1 minute then plug in the power to your modem first, wait another minute then plug in the power to your router (if your using one) then wait another 1 minute then try to get on the internet, if you can get on then try the games.

Also in steams connection preferences, what server do you have chosen (auto is usually best)

and do you have the appropriate downloading/speed connection selected there as well.

If this doesn't help run a free virus scan from a 30-day trial of nod32 you can find this at www.eset.com

If then it still doesn't help you then it is soley your ISP internet connection. (meaning you need to get them out there to fix the problem, CALL THEM, you may just have a slow connection and need to upgrade.)

Like many people you believe that a faster PC will give you a lower ping which is not true. Your internet connection determines that.

For those trying to defend the TC, don't. He simply will not listen to reason. He's made the exact same topic at least four times and he's gotten the same answers every time. He just won't believe that the problem is with his internet connection, and not with Steam, despite the fact that Steam has absolutely nothing to do with his ping in games. Don't bother trying to give him proper help though, he'll keep believing what he wants to as displayed by these threads: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27302037http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27286613http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27329394http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27333736 Now on the off chance that he actually wants to listen to reason this time, there are several things he can do: -If he can try plugging directly into the modem, that will limit any external factors with routers/wireless -Disable all extraneous programs, especially things like torrent programs that will eat up all of your bandwidth with unrestricted upload speeds -Make sure no one else on your network is downloading/uploading large files, if you have an unsecure wireless connection shut it down -Run a test at Speedtest.net and measure what speed you get and the ping it registers.

I agree with all of this excellent addition to the steps I have provided for him.

Except speedtest.net can be extremely inaccurate, I use Internetfrog.com for my main speed test.

While there was some great advice (and some useless flaming) Threesixtyci gave the most beneficial input. I went to settings and the DSL setting was too low so I adjusted it. Plus, for some odd reason the region was set to San Jose, Calif and so I changed it to a region much closer. I had never set these and how they got there I don't know. Anyway, I will test STEAM tomorrow. It is too late now. Thanks to all and especially Threesixtyci.

Ok. I made the adjustments. My Dsl is at the proper speed and the region is as close as it can get. Right across the lake. A few hundred yards. Still, no fix. How can my performance go so wrong so quickly? I have placed my trust in STEAM to give me the best performance for the games I listed with them. They are to maintain them to give me the best gaming experience I could ever hope for. What do I have now? The games listed with STEAM? High pings. Unplayable. I can use just the disk and get better pings. So what changes when I go to STEAM? Don't try ot tell me nothing is wrong with STEAM. This coming July I should have the money to clear any issue with my computer. Then, if it is STEAM they will be exposed. If it is my computer I will let my complaint go. Until then...my heart says it is STEAM.

Unless steam has decided to continue downloading games whilst you're trying to play online (and on last check, it stops any current downloads while you're playing a game), there's nothing that steam itself would be doing that would be leading to high pings.

Sorry I couldn't be bothered reading the WHOLE post... but do NON-Steam games also lag online...?

When you download a BIG File, does it max out your download speed?

There's no possiblity that steam is at fault here, it's either your connection, firewall, PC specs or malware. Easy as that, I'm sorry that your troubles continue only because you refuse to explore the other options why your multiplayer games are acting up.

Steam is great, and they are not responsible for your terrible connection and computer.
