Hi guys,

I'm new to multiplayer gaming (i.e. most of my experience is playing some co-op games with some friends... all casual gamers). I was thinking about getting Team Fortress 2 on steam and I was wondering if someone could tell me about any Newbie friendly servers or any matchmaking feature that the game might have. I tried searching online but couldn't come up with any good results.

Thanks.

If you download the free game Combat Arms, you can play on a server that is specifically for "reruits", which basically new players. I dnt know for TF2 tho, srry

Thanks for the quick answer :). I'd still like someone to detail some things about tf2 though. It's actually dirt cheap right now (discount for the holidays) but I don't wanna spend the money unless I know i will be able to have fun with some people of my skill level.

I just recently started playing TF2 myself, I can say it is pretty newbie friendly as long as you have had experience with online first person shooters before.

Haven't had much experience online. I have experience with single player a lot. Some Cod WAW on co-op (nazi zombies in particular) with friends and some Cod 4 Multiplayer (could never find noob tolerant people, so eventually stopped playing). I don't want this to happen again with tf2 for me :(.

Well as long as you figure out what each class does, then I think you'd be fine.

TF2 is fabulously tolerant of new people. It's the one online game I've ever played where I am willing to show people new tricks if they want me to. Most other games I'd tell them to eat their own chairs. TF2 is that unique game where its remarkably common to see the average, slightly crappy player who can't aim, they are everywhere. But then there's that one individual person who can stickybomb jump up to secret areas (which I did and got banned for) and these players inspire you. The one thing I'd suggest is to experiment lots. People on TF2 NEVER make the piss if you look like a prat, because the community is old and good manered enough to know that if you pull off whatever you're trying to do, it is going to help the team. If you die, everyone has a laugh including you.

To be frank, I can't think of a better example to start online gaming than TF2. The cartoon graphics are an excellent setting, the battle styles (captrue the intel) are generic enough for you to recognise and play along, and the players are either skilled or just plain average, but no one cares either way because if people get the impression you take the game too seriously you get booed off the server.

COD4 is a terrible game to start gaming on. It's effectively sucked up the CSS fanboys and they litter the cod4 servers with their brattish behaviour. TF2's playing style only brings in the relaxed and the intelligent.

it sucks but the best thing you can do is view the start of any online competitive multiplayer as "practice" where you will likely be massacred, you simply have to take this in good humour and in the understanding that you will get better. if you can do this you'll enjoy the game even if you are sucky, when you get better is when you need to care about playing well.

if anyone is giving you grief about being "noobish" or whatever just ignore them, or if you have to point out that they were once noobs.

also i just but the valve pack off steam, including tf2, if you want you can add me and we can suck together :D (please nobody put any innuendos there)

Actually I think Team Fortress 2 is probably friendliest multiplayer game to get into. I would suggest to play as the Medic first. Following and healing people will basically give you an understanding of the map and strategies that more experienced players utilize.

TF2 is amazing and very newbee friendly imo. Just learn the classes and see what one you are best with! Maybe to start off try being a medic or Pyro and see how they go!

Start off just familiarizing yourself with most of the maps that come with the game, you can simply create a game and password lock it so u can walk around, check things out etc, without being disturbed. You can also join games and switch to observer mode to see how its all played.

Back when i started as a newbie, i often played as heavy or soldier, both very simple classes as long as you've played fps games before, medic is also good for newbies but knowing when and who to uber takes a bit more coordination and tactical thinking. Once you've got the hang of those classes and have become familiar with the maps, try out spies and engineers for a completely different style of play ;)

oh btw did i mention TF2 is an awesome game? :P

Thanks for the helpful answers everyone. I have bought the game, though the downloading is going to take a while. It probably will not be done before tomorrow. Anyhow, thanks again. One question I had though, I used to have several emblems and a blog entry... I realized today while posting my second every blog entry that all the emblems are gone. anyone else experiencing this problem?

Team Fortress 2 is my favorite online game. It is very newb friendly and the community is very good-natured. It's not one of those games where you need godly aim, as there are classes like pyro, medic, and heavy which help the team without needing great aim. It is easy to learn and hard to master. :P
