I wouldn't go with the MSI. Maybe it's just bias because they're so goddamn ugly (like someone took the worst of the Qosmio design and combined it with an Acer), but they always strike me as build-quality nightmares.
The Alienware M14x (with i5 CPU and GT555 1.5GB) is probably the best choice. Well built, surprisingly reasonably priced, 14" chassis, decent gaming performance and ~5 hours of battery life for productivity-type use. Only negatives are the f***-ugly looks, some potential heat/noise issues (nothing major, but loud fans suck when everyone else is rocking MBP 13s in class), and it's a little on the heavy side (but so are all gaming laptops).
Other models to look at are the M11x (not as powerful, but much better for carrying around to classes or the library) and Dell XPS 15 (sort of a midpoint between the two in terms of performance and general livewithability). You might also want to look at the Lenovo W520 -- it's probably out of your price range, but Lenovo is known for having some ludicrous sale prices and it's a fantastic all-around laptop with the right Quadro GPU.
