Actually, the title is misleading, I need recommendations.

So I am lookin for one, I don't care what OS it comes with, it will get obliterated either way, because I am not a Windows noob, Mac noob, or a Linux noob, I will be a FreeBsd sexy user.

Actually I probably will use FreeBsd, no guarantees, but probably, that is, FreeBsd, is not notebook friendly, and netbooks... ahahaha, ok maybe no FreeBsd, but probably Debian then. I don't really want to use Ubuntu, because that is what all noobs use, it also so happens my main laptop runs Ubuntu.

That was totally not important to read, so what do you think is a good netbook? I want a fast cpu, dualcore, and 1-2 gigs of ram, preferably 2 gigs. I am looking at the eee pcs, and they seem pretty nice. Though I know nothing about Intel atom.

Suggestions are nice :D

(Also not manditory but highly recommended if it can run compiz)

I'm not sure if they make dual-core netbooks yet.

There are no dual atom netbooks YET. But there are a couple of REALLY good netbooks like the Lenovo S12 Nvidia Ion version and the Hp Mini 311. Both are on Newegg.

Yup, now I have to dismantle the whole thing just to put my 2 gig of ram stick I bought. Yes, I have to remove the motherboard, just to put in ram in that lovely laptop. Awesome design decisions ftw.

Wait I just cancelled my order, newegg said not all orders can be cancelled online as a default message, I hope it can be cancelle. I found flaws with it: no removeable battery, and it's quite a small battery! So now I am buying this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220651

EDIT: Succesfully cancelled, yay for a slightly thicker but much longer lasting laptop :D

That's why you do LOTS of research before plunking down for anything...otherwise you end up in that sort of situation because there was a quirk you overlooked! Nevertheless, good luck with the netbook venture.

Yeah, here is how I spend cash, I was like... hmm I am getting tired of lugging this 7.5lb dell inspiron 8100 with 256 megs of ram, no wireless, p3 @ 1.1 ghz, and a bettery that lasts 45 seconds. Yes it does actually last 45 seconds. I sent my dell vostro 1310 into Dell for rma, and I don't know when that is coming back.

Holy crap, that laptop's battery is even worse than my PowerBook G3. (Nine minutes on that one! Sure, I can add two new batteries rated for 8 hours EACH, but they're US$150 a pop! Way too much for a nine-year-old laptop!) Pretty heavy, too, and no wireless? No wonder you're feeling the netbook itch. (Maybe you can still use it as a thin client or compact server at home after you get that netbook, though. A 1.1 GHz Pentium III is still a fair chunk of processing power.) At least I get by with my HP TC1100, but the battery life is only around 1:45 on the battery I got with it. Some reviews state a per-battery life of almost 4 hours, which would be serviceable with two, but wouldn't most of those other batteries also be just as aged?

I still have a vostro 1310, which I love very dearly, it's so nice, except it's away, that's why I bought the netbook :P There isn't much the dell could do, I already have web server running, and my file server running, and SSH server. So I mean, it's kind of useless :( LCD is nice on it though.

That sounds nice, all I need to do now is dissasemble that laptop, and take the lcd out along with all the components and put it on the wall(in a frame). That will be totally useless and completely awesome.

My friend just got an Aspire One and while its nice I find the typing a little painful on 10 inches. I have tried 11.6 and it feels a little nicer. I plan on buying one for college notes. Places near me sell Acer Aspire Burst its pretty much the best looking one specs wise I have encountered. If it manages even a 5-ish hour battery life I'll be happy.

I was going to recommend one of the Acers but it seems you've already bought one. Having used a handful of netbooks I'd rank the Eee-PCs at the bottom in terms of build quality. Maybe they've improved them since then, but the early ones I used felt remarkably like toys, where the Acers were much sturdier. As a result I wasn't particularly surprised when Acer took a huge bite out of Asus' market share.

According to reviews the 1008HA which is the previous model really helped the build quality, and this is based off of it, so I hear it's good. The early eee pcs with 512 megs of ram do look like toys.

I personally have the Acer ONE and have put 2gb's of ram into it. It wasn't that big of a hassle. Its running Windows 7 right now and without Aero running it runs like a champ. Faster than XP actually which is what the netbook came with. Plus the Acer ONE, or at least the one that I have, have removable battaries and the like. Mine also has a 120gb hard drive which is pretty big for netbook standards.

The one I bought 1005ha, has a 250 gig hd, 1 gig of ram(I bought a 2 gig for it), and a n280 1.66ghz atom cpu, and a 950 intel gpu. it was 389$ which in my mind is a good price for its 9hour battery life(they say 10.5, which is lies). Oh and I am not going to put Windows on it obviously, Probably ubuntu 9.10, since it came out today.

It's not Ubuntu :P Ubuntu is based off of Debian :D (Well I think you meant that actually :P) And yeah it doesn't come with a lot of packages, and it is completely independent, Ubuntu is basically run by canonical. It's also more stable, since Ubuntu is based off of the unstable code of Debian, which is fine... that is pretty much stable :P And it also has a lot less user convenience, which is good, because then I can show off more :P (It has no GUI for the dpkg package manager, and just stuff like that) The downside of Debian is that I am going to be missing features, because let's face it, it's sticking to rather old stuff.

Well why don't you just use Ubuntu but in a really advanced way that everyone will envy? :P ;) Or you could always Dual-boot but it would probably just be a worthless effort. Oh and sir Linux can you tell me if any web development software is available for Linux? I mean the GUI based kind not the kind where you have to code everything by hand. ;)

It still will be called Ubuntu, I mean nobody over there even knows what apt-get is. I mean I have that useless, I mean sexy compiz running on it, here's a lil video of it on my vostro 1310 http://3dslice.net/videos/compizwindowsmedia.html Also about your second question, web development? Well since I am more of a programmer, than a scripter, I would use the Eclipse IDE with an html plugin, that would work. I don't follow the question about the GUI, but why not? I mean if you don't like the look of Gnome, you can try the KDE environment. I don't like the KDE environment, but a lot of people do, especially FreeBsd users.

In case you don't know the difference, this is just a quick view

and here is KDE

Those the KDE one is a more customized.(In the photos)

NAOOAoaoaoaoaooaoaoa I have lost faith in myself. Debian is based off of 2.6.26 Linux kernel (Lenny, stable) which is too old for it, I need 2.6.31. So I then go the testing debian, which is only 2.6.30, which has wi-fi support but no ethernet support... At which point I told my experiences, someone recommended I get Sidix but I was too lazy to put it onto an SD card and I despise the KDE environment, and the XFCE environment. (XFCE is awful because it doesn't have a GUI for samba). Then I just went with Ubuntu 9.10 :( It's based on 2.6.31 and it works flawlessly :(

(I originally planned on FreeBsd with a minimal gui, and doing most of my work without one for the hawtness, except I just thought... if Linux doesn't have drivers, there is no way in hell that FreeBsd has any :P)

IMO netbooks are a total waste of money . I have the acer aspire one , and the batery only lasts 1 hour. It is a headache just to surf the internet because is so damn slow , there are millions of website that don't even run on netbooks, but i heard that it might be an issue with firefox + SSD. I got mines for $250

Why not use Gentoo and compile your own kernel and then show of your "non-noob skills" or my personal favorite is Back Track since it comes loaded with tools from the Auditor Security Collection, which in include fuzzers, sniffers, scanners, password attacks, tunneling and whatever else one might need for network awesomeness.

Back track is a kde environment, and it has all of the hacking tools, it is nice. Except there is no point, there are no monitor mode wireless drivers for this wireless card. Also I have most of the tools on my other laptop in Ubuntu, Nessus + metasploit + nmap is a great combo. I also don't like Gentoo, and no I am not going to compile my own kernel, waste of time. (Though I don't understand how compiling a kernel is hard?) Also this netbook I got is very fast Vegita. Stuff opens quickly, but mine has a 250gig hd, and Windows 7 ran alright on it. Ubuntu runs great. Very snappy.

(Also side note, why are you carrying so many hacking tools on you? I mean if you're scanning for vulneribilities in your network fine, but all you really need is a VPN, and a SSH tunnel to your home server when on the go.)
