You grind to end game to work out that mmorpgs shouldn't have end games and you should be able to constantly evolve your character.
You raid 5 hours a night for 2 months to get the best gear in the game... to have new gear released in the next patch only to do it all over again.
But but... I raid for the experience, not the gear!RandomNoob33
Sure you do. That's why everyone still raids DM, UBRS and MC. Get over yourself. MMO's all inherently blow.
It's not just WoW -- ALL -- current MMORPGs has flaws that will irritate a gamer short of a fanboi.
1. The Grind -- Not going anywhere until you do some repetitive task for months. Consider yourself a slave hacking away at an object, over and over and over. In WoW you're required to put hours a day in just this if you want to level in your lifetime.
2. No End Game -- There is nothing to finally accomplish. There's no grand finale to feel that your time and effort achieved the ultimate goal. The devs know if you felt that, you'd get bored and leave. So your time is spent on 1001 quests that offer nothing more than some money, maybe some special gear, and experience.
3. Social interaction can suck -- Unlike FPS gameswhere smack talkis to be expected, but it's said more to entice the game to get the battle juices flowing. In these MMOs, the smack talk is meant to actually demean and is taken seriously -- they'll run to GMs for "assistance" if you call some high level slaver a "chicken in a purple suit", for example. Or worse, talk on the game's forum these "sensitive" gamers try to get you banned from that forum. They want it both ways THEY can smack talk, but if you do, they'll try whatever to kick or shun you, instead. If you didn't likethis in school, you'd hate MMOs.
4. Graphics and music is subpar -- You won't get the SP great immersive experience in these massiveworlds. To give huge worlds polys and textures will have to be compromised. Music will become repetitive after a week, so you'll find you'll turn off the background music and play your own instead.
5. Stores -- If you play a MMO that offers a way to buy objects to level or have the coolest gear, you'll quickly find out who ingame will be the leaders. No amount of hard work slaving and rising will be a match for someone who can just buy status and gear. As you'll have to slave again if you drop your gear (PvP), where the guys that buy just have to buy what they lost. Creates a serious game imbalance, as there's a top tier of gamers who may not be the best fighters/diplomats, but can buy the best.
6. PvE or PvP -- This is flamed to death. PvPers will not be satisfied unless they can attack anyone anywhere, even in starter areas and levels. PvEers won't be satisfied until PvPers are banned from the servers. Both are like oil and water, and to date, no MMO can make both groups happy. PvP only servers isn't what PvPers want, as it's no longer about fighting anyone (and too many of them want to fight lower level non-fighters for cheap kills). PvE only, and you'll just fight ingame monsters that can be boring quick since MMOshave sparse high-level monsters, that the whole server wants to camp. NowHellgate: London may be the best approach to this conflict (PvE but the scene changes for those in the vicinity, encouraging group play), but until it's released and tried, the jury is out.
So if you're fathoming playing a MMORPG, think ahead before you put your RL money and time into it.
If you take a good hard look at Wow, you will actually find it missing alot.
1. The graphics are compareable to a game from 2003
2. The sounds are quite linear, and alot of spells also looks like the same.
3. Gameplay aint actually that great after all, you just use 1 special combination of spells / attacks until they fall down and die
4. Not a single sign of a reward when you hit 70 (80 in six months) then you are just expected to be raiding day and night to get the best gear possible to date, until a NEW EXPANSION gets released and you can get even 10 levels higher up, and get even better gear.
5. Ever since TBC Wow sucked major, and i got a good feeling that Wrath of The Lich king will only make it worse. ( one of the new big feature is new dances... lame)
I don't want to hear how great it is. Just topic pleaseCracker__Jack
Looking to make a "balanced" decision, eh?
It's not "overrated"...
It got tremendous reviews from nearly every single reviewing source, GOTY awards, and has millions of people playing it as well.
I am not saying it is perfect, heck, there are things I do not like (such as the end game). But claiming it is "overrated" is just silly. It has the reviews and players to back it up.
What's with this god aweful trend of late claiming every popular game is "overrated"?
PvP is even more boring then it was before. Not to mention the PvE aspect of the game requires you to break up with your GF. Not to mention itemisation has piss poor lazy ass design due to the game having a mix between PvE and PvP and all classes have 3 type of play styles in the talent tree. Itemisation is the biggest design flaw the game has in my humble opinion.
The game is not overrated... It used to be pretty good with Stratholmeand all. But now... TBC and resilience totally **** it up man :/
Why WOW is overrated?
1- Cartoony bland graphics;
2- Monthly fees, total rip off;
3- Everyone has same armors and gears at high level;
4- Little to no characters customization;
5- Slow paced combat not enough strategy.
My opinion tough...
Lord_Drax
It's your opinion that you don't like the cartoony graphics but i think bland is the wrong word to use because they are far from bland. Bland is Everquest 2 with no personality and horrible to look at ugly levels and character models. Monthly fees are Standard with mmorpgs too so WOW is not a rip off it's just because otherwise they wouldn't be able to constantly make content for it or keep the servers running.
The last 3 however i wont argue with because i agree.

Which MMORPGs have faster combat?
Raganrok
Screw ragnarok, Diablo was the original RPG on meth. The lack of players per game is evened out by ridiculous amounts of enemies.
Its free and I can bot :P

Boiling it down to the primary two reasons people hate WoW:
I flip burgers for al iving and $15/month actually matters to me
I was busted for botting/hacking on Diablo 2 or WoW so I hate everything that Bliz makes
 if the Ragnarok server in my country starts banning people for botting they are going to ban the entire server :PBoiling it down to the primary two reasons people hate WoW:

Wow...that game sounds great

While I agree that WoW is over-rated, and that MMO's in general have tons of inherent flaws, what's the point of this thread? To spend your time hating on a game with other people who hate on the game as well? No offense but...oh forget it. Nevermind.
All MMORPGs are great while you can get better gear and skills with a simple 5 men group. Once you it starts to be necessary to raid and wait for 15 - 40 people to join it starts to suck.
So generally play MMORPGs with every classes till the max level. After that is time to jump to another MMORPGs for new experiences.
First of all for a game to be "over-rated" it has to, by definition, be popular. I've never heard of an unpopular "over-rated" game.
At any rate, these are the reasons I think WoW is very over-rated.
1. Boring combat (EQ2, City of Heroes/Villains, D&DO, etc., all have much better combat models)
2. No cohesive story line. Why am I running these quests again? I never felt like there was any real reason when I played WoW.
3. Lackluster character development.
4. Small choice of classes to choose from and not nearly enough variety within classes
5. Incredibly dull quests (see #2)
6. Way too gear-dependent and achievement oriented for my tastes
7. End game is terrible (raid, raid, raid, raid, yawn...)
8. I personally didn't care for the art style. Way too garish.
9. The community is pretty foul when compared to other games in the genre
10. It's a min/maxer/power-gamer game
I'm sure I could think of a few more reasons but I'll stop at a nice even 10.
its just too damn boring. it takes forever to run to a place and then back just to do a quest..you also have to face the enemy to fight, your character isnt smart enough to automatically turn around. Plus, its the Plague.
Blizzard: Redefining mediocrity one game at a time.

Can't take you seriously after reading your sig...
The biggest problem with WoW is definately end-game. Painful raid progression for better gear so that you can PvP with an unfair advantage. I remember beating on a resto-druid for 2 minutes straight while he did nothing but heal, just to run and get away. Checked his armory profile; all top-tier-gear.
That alone makes level 70 pointless and completely over-rated.
Lets see where do i start rofl..Ive said it a 1000 times an ill say it again...Yes for those of you who think ive yet to try wow...Ive tried it...Its the easiest piece of garbage on the planet..Morons get hooked to it...Its watered down version of the greatest mmorpg ever to date...In my eyes btw...Everquest live...
Yes Everquest live was the best ever...They had epic quests an actually made it challenging....The challenge for guilds to gather together was enough to get ones core going...You would wait see how fast your guild can group up...Mean while the other guild is waiting also..Finally when you have all your pieces you engage in battle..Wow oh joy instances...Lets head into instance b c d an yaaa we get a item...
Sure some of you will say everquest 2 is like this..Ive never mention everquest 2 its also boring, slugfest like wow is...Everquest2 catered to wow..For the competition..
If you want a new experiance play Hellgate london..Its going to be the new wave of mmorpgs, mark my word...

It's not overrated, it's a good game. I just hate Blizzard, and I hate the end-game experience more.
No matter how much they add, the end game sucks.ProudLarry
This guy got it square on.
overrated : NO !
i think it's a great game, i played it the first year, i had fun !
but... the community are usualy jerks, or kids that try to show others how the game works (but that shouldn't be affecting a rating)
also, new thing now 2~3 years later is ...
blizzard just stopped releasing updates and just grabs everybody's money to release expansions (so you have to pay for the updates now)
but the very worst thing about wow, that you discover once you reach max lvl, it's that there is really not much content ontil you reach max lvl (and because of the lack of updates you end up always doing the same thing at max lvl)

OVERRATED: VERY YES!
I played the one week trial and it showed me that 9 million people are dumbasses.
Hmm where to begin. Blizzard has absolutely given nothing to 1-60 players in the last year since they included the battlegrounds. Pretty much all the updates have been for the 60+ group. The pvp is stale and gear decides half of the game from the start. The expansion packs made most of the previous epic gear obsolete and only gave a small advantage when leveling. I also think Outlands were a bit uninspired in terms of art design. I also wonder what still attracts the 9 million players to the game after all these years.

Maybe because they are jealous that a game they totally hate is one of the most popular MMOs around.
My problem with the game was that everything was the same. Kill 12 of this, give me 12 of these that in order to get, you need to kill 14 of these, deliver this to him so you can get the quest to kill 9 of these.
This wouldn't be bad, but the combat is just.... boring. Especially once you stop learning new moves, and start just gettting upgrades, because you just figure out a plan. Devestate, devestate, rend, devestate, sunder armor, devestate, shield bash, devestate..... or something else I never got that high (37 and the only reason I got that high was my friends).
Also what's been pissing me off lately is everything WoW stole from Dark Age of Camelot. Just got the 14 day trial, WoW took almost everything from the griffens (horses in DAoC), to the combat, and even the factions (horde and alliance, Albion Norse, and can't remeber 3rd one right now). At least in DAoC if your getting bored with grinding, wait a day or two, you get a free level so you can actually get some quests. Now DAoC may have stolen some stuff from Everquest, i dunno haven't tried that 1 yet, but that was just my opinion on the subject.
I still have absolutly no idea how people get sucked into this game.
