It depends on the area you live in. The more populated, probably the more faster you'll be able to go. Though overseas I see ridiculous speeds. I hear Tokyo has one of the fastest ISPs.animemog

I have a friend in the UK that beta'd a 1gb fiber connection. Needless to say I'm incredibly jealous of them! They get it offically in July...sigh, so unfair.

agreed. I have the Verizon FTTH (Fiber To the Home), called FiOS. Im using the middlle package (20mbit down, 5mbit up), and download at 2.4-2.6 mbps.

It should be noted that megabit (mbit) is not the same as a megabyte (mb). a megabit is 1/8 of a megabyte. so when you see 20mbit download/5mbit upload, you need to divide those numbers by 8 to get the real speed of the service.

I think you get mixed up a bit with megabytes (MB) and Megabits(Mb)

megabit per second (abbreviated as Mbit/s or Mbps)

In the UK you tend to get phone, internet and TV all in one package. When this comes through a cable its far better than ADSL as it doesn't loose signal. I think its the same with fiber, isn't that for really short distances?

Man you guys are lucky. I pay for a 512 kbps conection but only get 120kbps maximum when downloading torrents and when downloading with IE7 I only get 90kbps. How can I speed this up? My network card? or is it my ISP?

Try downloading with a download manager such as flashget ( http://www.flashget.com/index_en.htm ) and it should be a little faster.

I get 300KBps in firefox, but over a megabyte when using flashget.

Damn, I wish we had FiOS in Canada.....

Cable companies in the UK uses fibre optic cabling underground it is better than ADSL and can achieve much higher speeds.

I've got comcast 6Mbit cable. Download speeds are way better than the **** verizon dsl that I had before. I've even managed to download at over 1MB/s at times. I pay $60/month for it...

Why would you pay for a download manager? Flashget is perfect and it is free, it maxes out my internet download speed. The sites you are downloading from probably can't give each person up to 20mbps though.

I'm not really convinced on how reliable speedtest is I have an 8 meg comcast line which normally averages around 4 meg. Last time I went and did speedtest it said I had a 27 meg download speed. I thought it was crazy so I tested it a couple times and that's what it kept telling me. I then went to toast.net and ran there and got my normal 4.

Just ran it now and tested several servers. Speedtest says I get 34989 kbps down and 1253 kbps up to a server about 50 miles from me and on the second test I got 54458 down 1236 up for a server about 450 miles away. Just a thought for those who use speed test.
