ok so i wanna put together one computer using parts from two old computers (4-6 years old). i have a custom computer and an hp pavilion computer with the mini tower. i wanna take out all the parts form the two computers and use the case that came with the custom computer. im gonna choose the best parts from each computer and put them together. im gonna use both hard drives, ram sticks, and cd drives. im gonna install windows xp onto it and wipe the hard drives to make one decent computer. what are some things i have to look out for? what can/cannot i (from above) do? what did i miss and will this work?

It will work, but you will end up with a very dated PC anyway, no matter what parts you pick. In those 4-6 years, lots of new and faster technology has become available. My best and only advise would be to sell those 2 old PC's and save some money to build you own brand new PC, with good tech that will last you a while.

Can you tell us the parts that you plan on using from each computer?

Ah, OK, for learning, this will be a very good opportunity, you are wise of trying to do this to learn from it. Hands-on experience, I like it! :) Like sykonfc asked, please tell us the parts of both PC's, so we have a general idea of what parts there are available. If the PC's are still in a working condition, you could use PC analysis software like Belarc Advisor, PC Wizard, Everest, CPU-Z or Sisoft Sandra to see what parts there are in the PC's and get a list of them. In case the PC's don't work anymore, you will have a lot of work figuring out what parts are what, but most info can usually be found emprinted on the hardware boards, so that shouldn't be too hard.
