diablo2, never winter night 2, morrowind (borderline was released in 2003), everquest 2 (an MMO but the most successful of its genre (12 expansions omg)), dungeon siege. thats about it and some of those are older than 2003 buy a good amount, 2000 -2003 wasnt a really good time for rpgs. in 05-modern day u see a big resurgence in solid rpgs such as oblivion, gothic 3, ff12, prince of persia, legend of zelda : twilight princess, etc.

He said pre 2003 as before 2003... Btw Prince of Persia and Zelda are not RPG's

On topic: Planescape Torment, Baldur's gate series, Icewind Dale series, Fallout 1-2, Neverwinter Nights, Arcanum, Temple of elemental evil. morrowind. There is a lot more, tho its all i can think of right now.

You will most likely get Baldur's gate, Planescape torment and Fallout a lot in this thread as they truly are classics.

Morrowind was 2002...Diablo 2 is not a classic RPG...NWN2 was, I believe 06...2000-2003 was one of the best periods for RPGs in the history of gaming. On topic, as Cenerune stated: All of the Baldur's, Fallout, if you can tolerate the pixels, go for Ultima 1-8, and although I haven't played it, I have heard Septerra Core is quite good. Hope that helps. Otherwise, try searching Baldur's Gate on gamespot and searching through the "Similar Games" on the left.

I'll second Morrowind (released in 2002, not '03). Probably my most memorable single-player experience. The only other one I'd suggest would probably be Gothic. What I played of it was quite good. (never finished it for various reasons not directly related to the game itself) I never really had much fun with the Infinity engine games (Baldur's Gate I/II, Planescape). God knows I tried to like them. I prefer classic console RPGs to their PC counterparts from the early-mid '90s.

Planescape. Especially if you want something different from the traditional fantasy setting.

pretty much agree with all of you Morrowind when I played it, thought it was terrible then when I got into it I was pretty much in my room for about 2yrs. (had a beard down to my knee caps) Grandia 1 and 2 were superb but the first one was one the best rpgs ever played. Neverwinter nights 1 with the expansions was brilliant. I don't know what Gothic is like but I have heard nothing but good gameplay and storyline from fans. And can somebody please tell me why dungeon siege is so popular, I have the first one and in my opinion worst game.

[QUOTE="stike22"] I don't know what Gothic is like but I have heard nothing but good gameplay and storyline from fans. And can somebody please tell me why dungeon siege is so popular, I have the first one and in my opinion worst game.

Gothic 1 & 2 are both great but the combat system takes some getting used to. I'd highly recommend Arcanum and Nox on top of the others listed above. You may also want to check out Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor, Revnant (short but good), and the Icewind Dale series. Planescape: Torment is still the best RPG of all time in my opinion followed very closely by the Baldur's Gate series and Morrowind with it's expansions.

I bought Fallout 1, 2, Fallout tactics - from GoG.com @ $5.99 each. Gog makes all games XP and Vista compatible. (You'll find gothic 1 there too!) Awesome site dude. Also try to get baldur's gate 1, 2 along with neverwinter nights 1, icewind dale 1, 2 , sacred + expansion, morrowind. Phew! Lots of games to play. Plan accordingly. :-)
