I'm looking to overclock an AMD Phenom II X4, and I know that the AM3 socket is relatively new. But I was wondering what would be the best type of aftermarket cooling solution (fan) I could buy for it for overclocking purposes.

Thanks.

HiI have an LGA 775 Intel socket and use a Xigmatek

Rs-1283. It works very well. It would work well on

AM3 as well. Take a look at this article:

http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm#AMDHEATSINK

Scroll down a bit for the AMD recommendations.

As far as I am aware, AM3 coolers are exactly the same as AM2/AM2+ coolers. Just go for the best of one of those.

Anyone know if these two heatsinks have had good results with the Phenom II?

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro

Zalman 92mm Cooler

I looked at some of the specs of the Katana 3, and the heatsink material was made of aluminum, not copper. I was trying to see if I could get better temperature drops with a copper heatsink, although if the Katana 3 is a popular choice with good reviews, I would go for it.

Running my x2 550 as a 3.2Ghz quad, it did not exceed 40C in a prime run this morning. It's the first HSF I've used that I actually feel like heat is being effectively disappated through the pipes and fins. Also, the base and pipes are both copper (all-copper base). Having used the AC7 Pro for my Intel build, I would highly recommend the fp 64. However I cannot attest to its ability to cool quads.

Well the best coolers are the TEC coolers. They are expensive and big but they work as good as a good watercoolering system. My father has one and his cpu never gets above 28C and he has a poorly vented case.

Yeah, I had used an AC Freezer Pro 64 in my old build with an Athlon X2. It definitely worked wonders.

Those coolers look amazing. It's just unfortunate that my budget wouldn't really allow for that solution :-P @Staryoshi87 - Did you have to use any thermal paste (Arctic Silver) in combination with your heatsink, or did it run standard like that after installing just the heatsink?
