Nod32 is the best all in one commercial package at the momment. It's pretty cheap for the full version and ahs the works for security. It's a somewhat small footprint and not a major resource hog like NAV or McAffee. In short, if you are looking for a comercial package (some feel better with one) then this is the best bang for the buck. If you plan to stick with free, then as far as a AV goes I'd agree with the majority here and say avast is your best bet, but AVG is not something to ignore. I personaly use AVG for a number of reasons that really need any detail (mainly ceratin speed options and altering my own definition deployments), but Avast is best for most people looking for free AV.
I wont bother listing firewall's other than the Nod32 package, as the "best" seems to change almost weekly. Most of the big name firewalls do their job well if a user understands how to use them. Most users dont have a clue (or a care), so again, Nod32 full suite is a good option. Just make sure you stick with security basics and you will improve your odds. Dont download forigen scripts and exec's. Dont boradcast you SSID. Regular updates to your security stuff, etc, etc. On a final note, Windows firewall (XP or Vista) is just fine for basic protection if you have manage your traffic well and keep an eye out. If you know how to use it then it can be pretty advanced, at least more so than for what the average person needs.
