just cause one person does it doesnt mean everybody will do it. plenty of piraters may pirate a good game, realize they can get good games for free, and be even happier that they didnt have to blow 50 dollars on something they do want. if they pirated a bad game, theyll think they got off the hook. if they pirate a good game, then they just hit the jackpot. of course, there are some people like your friend who are willing to do the right thing half the time, but pirating a bad game is no better or no worse than pirating a good game. starcraft is a great game, and it is also pirated a whole lot. im just sayin... hell, its only 20 bucks and people still pirate it. also, if a game were that good, plenty of people would hear about it/ want to play it. and that would lead to an influx of piraters. the only thing that offsets that is that a lot more people would buy the game so its success covers up the piracy.
that's like saying women can protect themselves from rapists by being beautiful.
nope, it doesn't. quality helps the sales, of course, but it's entirely pointless when facing criminals.

hey hey hey.. im male and im just a beautiful as any of them!!!!
wait wait wait there's a pirated version of the game floating around? This is excellent.....I mean um yeah pirating is bad don't do it.
Did your friend mention that he can't save or glide in the pirated version?
simplyderp
I heard theres a fix for that:)

ZDS-Fudgeblood
Yeah, that's a good answer. :)
Also, what games are considered "good" is relatively subjective. So, if someone doesn't think a particular game is good enough to buy, yet good enough that they still want to play it, they steal it in a torrent; that's a cop out and weak justification for piracy.
ive been saying this for years.
developers need to take the responsibility on themselves, and quit blaming the public.
you make a good game, you make a good amount of cash. End o' story
I am sure it might help some, but like others have said criminals are criminals. I really don't see a lot of people running out to get it even if it is good. Especially if it is singleplayer based. Play the singleplayer a few times and you're pretty much done with it. And you're not out $50. I personally think piracy is wrong but people will still do it and not actually buy a retail version of the game.
Agreed 100%. Devs need to quit their yappin' about how PC piracy is affecting their sales. Hell, if they're truly losing money then they could just NOT make the game for PC. Why then, do they make it and still expect it to be piracy-free? It's not gonna magically go away, it's like a persistent disease without a real cure. The Sims franchise sold a lot, COD4 sold a lot, Oblivion and Fallout 3 sold a lot as well. You want profit? Make a damn good game and pray people will like it. I'm looking at you, Electronic Arts.ive been saying this for years.

alot of you are really against downloading free stuff...the same guys who bicker about pirating act like they never downloaded a song off the net.No its not different..I am a musician so believe every paying fan counts.xconbud
Saying 'everyone else does it' doesn't make it any less immoral. Some of us don't download music (or anything else illegal), simple as that. Oh, and you're not downloading free stuff, you're downloading costly stuff that you don't want to pay for - there's a big difference.
On another note i did download the pc version of batman aa...but i also bought the ps3 version 1st..beating it the 2nd day i got it and love(d) the game. That being said why would i waste 100+$ on 1 game?..that would be retarded since i also have a family that are waaay more important. Some of you sharing haterz need to take a chill because you don't know peoples personal situations...we're all gamers here,so lets talk about the actual games and not how they were obtained. Its childish...reallyxconbud
What I find childish is your attempt to defend piracy - you don't want to spend money on games because you have other things to spend it on? That's fine in itself, but don't pretend that you have some kind of inherent right to play games that you can't afford to buy (or choose not to).
If you want to be a gamer, pay for it, just like anything else in life.
It's very easy to say when it isn't your $20-$100 million budget and time effort going into a project. I'm very disappointed with PC games lately being closely tied in with console development, to a point I'm just not eager to buy games. People like Batmann AA, cool, but for some of us we don't want to pay 50$ and tax for another beat em up', rather, I want much more sophistication in games that feels native to the platform.ive been saying this for years.

Death of Piracy will be the death of bad PC versions of games.
eikast
Pirates don't pirate bad games to protest them, they do it because they want free stuff. If they wanted to deny a company sales, they simply wouldn't buy the game.
So...yeah, pirates are just going to keep stealing regardless of the quality of the games.
As Rodney Reynolds a.k.a 3dgameman said, PC games cost too much. They should be in the $30ish range. Look at Steam and see how wildly successful they are, selling many cheap games. k0r3aN_pR1d3I won't be complaining that much about cost (considering that they're $10 cheaper than consoles anyways, and most launch for around $40 or $30 nowadays, just look at Crysis Warhead) but I do agree that it's pretty awesome how cheap PC Games are getting. There is some ring of truth to Good Games Killing Piracy, I'd much rather own a copy of an amazing game than just take it. But the thing is, Pirates only really PIRATE good games anyways.
I think it may not resolve the problem, but it definitely helps.
I remember people saying that tape recorders would destroy the music industry when I was a kid, but the truth is good material will always sell.
I miss the old days on Gamespot :(!'
I say we call for a vote with more Pirates vs Anti pirate topics!
Actually - good parenting is what kills piracy.
Good parents teach their children the difference between right and wrong.
Taking something that doesn't belong to you, without paying for it, or without the permission of the owner - is wrong. It's that simple.
pfff you know that will lead into one more "pc gaming sucks because of requireing to buy new hardware every year"i support zero tolerance coding in pirated versions.
the first versions of the game that detect they are in fact pirated will automatically overclock cpu and gpu clocks 50%+ and fry the components. Now that would be damn awesome.
nutcrackr
I think its funny the way no one has any qualms with downloading music without paying for it. Yet when it comes to games, thats another story isn't it?
Tbh they are making enough money anyway, if it wasn't profitable to make games then companies wouldn't make them.
Three steps for easily combatting piracy.
1)Make good quality games
2)Make them easily available (digital distrobution)
3)Make them good value for money
Just look at the Orange Box for example. There *are* ways of pirating STEAM games. Yet how many people will? Its much easier to just buy it for £15, download it straight onto your computer and look at the value for money you are getting.
I think in the future we will see game companies look towards alternative sources of revenue, such as micro transactions, advertising within games, merchandise, sponsorhips, etc.
That doesn't make any sense...that's like saying women can protect themselves from rapists by being beautiful.

dont-read-this
I think thats the point. It dosent make sense either to claim that making a better game will stop people from stealing it.
