STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky (inferior to the first but it looks real pretty) look very good and are in line with the likes of Farcry 2 and Crysis. If you really like realism check out ARMA 2 but be warned while it looks good the game is not for everyone. ARMA 2 has a demo so give it a look before buying.
Check out the Witcher for a good looking RPG. It may not look the best but you have to take into account that the engine it runs on is from 2000ish. The emphasis is on action and choices that matter so boredom won't follow like in your traditional fetch quests ones that are online (WoW). I know you said that you like first person shooters but you can't call yourself a PC gamer imo if you haven't at least tried the demo for this.

How does STALKER come anywhere close to looking like Crysis and Farcry 2? IMO it's one of the worst looking games this gen.

I haven't played the first, but Clear Sky is absolutely beautiful when cranked up to the highest settings.Take a look for yourself, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qxg9rK086SU . Reason I recommended the first is Clear Sky makes little sense if you jump into it first.

Ah. Yeah, Clear Sky looks a lot better than the first one, that's for sure.
Ill second the Stalker games ^^ On higher settings the graphics looks ok, but the lighting (and shadows)is so damn aweinspireing, a thunderstorm in that game acturally has the ability to make me slightly nervous. Indoor looks way better then outdoor, but outdoor still looks like HL2 just... big... and with good lighting :P
the Problem with the STALKER games tho is that they look so insanely good in motion, but it really does not look all that good in stills (shots).
The Witcheras someone else mentioned also looks pretty darn good on higher settings, not Crysis good, but it does look impressive enough that Id often stop in awe of what I saw, kinda like when I emerged from the sewers in Oblivion the first time.
I do not know how long you want to go back, but COH and DOW2 also looks quite good.
ARMA2 looks good when you consider how big the maps are.
The last 2 CODs also look quite nice, with some nice lighting.
Sadly most devs make games for all systemsnow, so the shortcommings of the consoles hardware are hitting the PC crew.
Install STALKER Complete MOD 2009 and graphics will be way better on STALKER SOC.rmfd341
I just tried installing it as well as it's patch and now my game crashes when the menu is supposed to load up :/

I agree.Stalker clear sky looks amazing at highest settings Arma 2 also looks great and so does cryostasis If you are into RTS games Empires total war looks phenomenal . DoW 2 sins of solar empires and world in conflict also looks quite good You can also try entropia ( freeMMO using micro transactions based on cryengine 2 so i guess it must look amazing)
EDIT: PC version of FEAR 2 also looks great ( there is a single player demo to try look for it on steam)
