You should definitely try Sanitarium, it's got some pretty twisted imagery without resorting to cheap guts&gore or bogeymen and the story is great. Clive Barker's Undying is also a game every fan of horror games should try; while it does feature a substantial amount of combat, I have a hard time considering it a FPS and there were plenty of moments of genuine horror in it (at least it was like that for me).
Other than that, I don't know. I've played Alone In the Dark and it didn't seem all that scary to me; neither did Resident Evil. Silent Hill had some merits but the gameplay/combat mechanics seemed tedious and uninspiring. Some people say F.E.A.R. is horror but again I have a hard time viewing it as such. I guess it all depends on the person and what type of horror sends chills down ones spine.
I'm not the best at recommending horror games because quite honestly none have made me even flinch, but I'll lay down a few for you.
Try Gabriel Knight 2. It's more suspense than horror, but there's plenty of scariness in there.

completely offtopic, but thank you for mentioning. serching for "gabriel knight" revealed this upcoming title Grey Matter, wich is looking extremely good.
painkiller: heavens got a hitman
painkiller: battle out of hell
painkiller: ressurection
painkiller: overdose (dont get this one unless you lvoe ressurection, its not a very fun game)
singularity (argueable)
bioshock (argueable)
the path isnt so much a blood and gore as it is a psychologicaly messed up game.. it messes with your head man..
amnesia: dark descent is an obvious choice
FEAR
FEAR:extraction point
PREY and QUAKE 4 both have their momments but thats going a ways back..
No love for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?
I don't know bout you guys but when I got into those "X" labs I was experiencing some decent anxiety haha.
Not to mention in the sewers the first time you meet a controller.

It had too many guns. I felt like Rambo in space. tlranftGuns? in Dead Space.... hmmm....not really too many,,......you even started off with just a tool (not actually a gun) Okay, true. I agree that not /all/ it used were jump scares and it did have a certain intensity to it.. but it just wasn't what I was looking for, y'know? After a certain point, I began to feel very secure because I had upgraded armor, weapons, etc. And yeah. His first weapon was a tool 'cause 'cause Isaac was like a miner, wasn't he? But anyway. Relevance is low. :P I like the suggestions put here - not that I've played them, but I've been looking into them. Also, Sanitarium, I see, is quite old and I can't seem to get ahold of a copy of it.. I'm not even sure if it's freeware, so I'll try and find a legit copy before I go ahead and go through the trouble of getting it to run. ;P Yeah, that was what I loved about it....he is just a normal miner worker, not a soldier. DUDE... you must.. No YOU MUST... play SANITARIUM.... It is my favourite adventure game ever....it blows your mind inside out and then out inside.... It isn't scary, just really messed up.. to the point that you reach the end and you can't tell what was real and what wasn't. I have it on CD....you don't live in Australia NSW by any chance so I could lend it to you??? lol....
Amnesia
Scratches - The Director's Cut.
The Black Mirror
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
The Lost Crown
Cryostasis
Dark Fall
Penumbra series
FEAR
Those are the ones that spring immediately to mind and I heartily recommend them all.

i agree they were quite frightening
one of the scarier momments i gotta admit that ive experience is in singularity when you enter that warehouse via the flooded basement :P
that was 1000% freaky! if your unfamilir ill let a spoiler throught once..
basically after swimming through some flooded basements n such you wind up at a checkpoint and a body falls into the water in front of you. when you submerge your in a warehouse full of dudes on spikes n such and hanging from the roof by spikes an such.. it looks like some sort of storehouse for folks killed by the freaks from "the hills have eyes" :P

I don't agree with Dead Space using cheap jump scares....it was more of an atmospheric terrifying ordeal... where you were scared of turning the next corner... (although of course it did have jump scares too)FelipeInsideIt had too many guns. I felt like Rambo in space. Guns? in Dead Space.... hmmm....not really too many,,......you even started off with just a tool (not actually a gun) Hmm, maybe I should have been more specific. What I meant to say is that it has a crazy arsenal of weapons; not "guns", but weapons. I feel that in Dead Space, Issac greatly overpowers the Necromorphs, and the ammo is too common. Where as with games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, ammo is a lot more conservative and you really have to think things through before you waste a whole clip trying to bring down an enemy. With that said, I still love the game (it's one of my favorites). I just didn't find it intense enough, and I too think it relies far too much on cheap jump scares (which do not work on me). Dead Space has great atmosphere and good gameplay, but it lacks in intensity because it's more of an action game like Doom 3 or The Suffering rather than a true survival horror game.

The last great Resident Evil before the zombies became humans with leeches. Capcom failed so hard with RE in my opinion. Who wants to fight leech people? Give me zombies!Amnesia - atmosphere is incredible.
Dead Space - overall, my favorite this generation.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica - my favorite of all-time.

Cryostasis: It's a really good looking, moody FPS adventure game. It got mediocre reviews because of some technical issues, and the combat is kind of clunky, but I really recommend it if you have a good PC. Very good game.
Clive Barker's Undying: This one's tough to find, I got it out of a bargan bin years and years ago. It's an FPS game with some mild RPG elements like magical powers that are very well implemented. Great story, great mood, and some really cool enemies. And it's very scary.
Call of Cthulhu: Another FPS/adventure hybrid. It's probably the scariest game I've ever played (after Amnesia) and the first half of the game is VERY intense, since you don't have a weapon. Plus it's HP Lovecraft.

Shadowboro
Yes, a couple old point-and-click adventures on GoG.com .....
Sanitarium and Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within
Probably the 2 best adventure games I've ever played.
Condemned was good, Undying was also decent. Amnesia is driving me nuts too.
I didn't like Dead Space all that much though. Atmosphere was good, the cursor pointing you to your destination was not. I thought I was going to get lost in that big spaceship (which is kind of the point of outer-space horror) sadly it wasn't so. ALTHOUGH, one boss fight in particular was really good and provided a feeling of Ctulhu-like inevitability (the one you freeze).

Sanitarium's available on GOG for $9.99FelipeInsideThank you very much, kind sir, this is greatly appreciated. I will look into it. (: You will NOT look into it... You WILL GO NOW AND BUY IT !!!
I like FelipeInside's convincing power haha! I agree, Sanitarium was great. I was fortunate enough to find it in a used game bin way back when. Being originally a King's Quest gamer it was a real treat for me.
Also, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father is also a good game to consider.
Thief 1MoonAchillesThe Thief games were amazing.. I remember my dad playing them and, I forget which Thief this was in, my dad got to this level where he was in a mine and there were zombies.. he saw a person and tried to blackjack him, but the person turned out to be a ghost and that scared me to death. Then again.. I was like, 7 years old. I played the latest one (Deadly Shadows) and that was really good too. Easier than the first two games by far, but still fun. I love the Thief series. (: Anyway.. Besides that, I like the suggestions, guys. And I DID end up getting Sanitarium and Amnesia. Both very good games, though I put down Amnesia so I could play Sanitarium 'cause it really sucked me in. It's great, haha.
Yes, yes, you get this thread a lot, I'm sure.. but I'm looking something more along the lines of an indie horror.. Doom 3 bores me. Bioshock 1 & 2 are too similar to System Shock - nothing new there for me, not exciting. I liked the Silent Hill series. Penumbra series were good, too. Dead Space had a good story, but it tried to scare you via cheap, jump scare tactics, just like Doom 3. Basically.. I want something with a solid storyline, good atmosphere.. preferably not super heavy with combat, but I'm not gonna complain too much. Like I said - indie horror games are pretty good, so feel free to throw some of those out there, but add a link for me to follow if you would. tl;dr: Good game with solid story, atmosphere, and is scary without putting monsters in your face from dark corners please.FelipeInsideI don't agree with Dead Space using cheap jump scares....it was more of an atmospheric terrifying ordeal... where you were scared of turning the next corner... I wasnt scared i ran through the whole game literally, and the guns made in not scary at all.
