I enjoyed Planescape Torment much more. :P Dragon Age is a great recent one. Heard great things about The Witcher but haven't gotten around to it yet. Other than that, if you haven't played the classics like Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, or even KOTOR, I'd highly reccomend them.Planetscape Torment.

Try Diablo 1&2 (they are old but still worth playing), Neverwinter Nights 1&2, Knights of the old republic 1&2 (there is a bit of amnesia in the 2nd but still it's a great game), Oblivion of Fallout 3 (they are almost the same in my opinion) or even Fable. They're all great games and they'll keep you busy for some time.

There have been 93472598 threads about this in the last week. Seriously, play Baldur's Gate 2. It's the father of the modern RPG; it has a fantastic story, great characters, colorful graphics and incredible artwork. It has a few of the traditional RPG elements, including the ones you labeled "usual cliches," but you will not find a real RPG without those elements - or any kind of fantasy novel or fantasy videogame for that matter. To better gain an appreciation for the genre, you need to play its crown jewel, which is Baldur's Gate II. The first couple hours in the dungeon are not very exciting, but if you muscle through that (use a guide), you will have the world to explore. Trust me, once you get into this game with the correct mindset (i.e., "this game is awesome, I am in the mood for RPGs, and I can't wait to find out what happens next!"), you will not need another RPG or another game for weeks, maybe even months if you complete all the side quests.
You simply cannot go wrong with Baldur's Gate II. Even better, once you've beaten it there is Throne of Baal, and after that, you might play its predecessor or try out other Infinity Engine games such as the Icewind Dale series (the second one is better). Planescape: Torment is very good, but I would highly suggest playing BGII first so you can begin to appreciate the genre and get a handle on the gameplay - Planescape is a dark game. Also after BGII, try Temple of Elemental Evil, or if you're in the mood for a very slow game, try Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.
Really though, take our advice about Baldur's Gate II. I am fully aware that it's hard to get into at first, but once you play it, you will regret waiting so long.
Dragon Age: Origins
Torchlight
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republc II: The Sith Lords
Fallout 3
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Jade Empire
Mass Effect
It's a great game but I could never get into it myself. That was about seven or eight years ago though, right after it came out and before I was really into RPGs. I think maybe it's time to dust off the CDs again. ....after I get through BG2 again, of course. How could most everyone forget about Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura?
Now that game has the best story I've ever seen. And it's still worth playing. And replaying.

My all time favorite list most or all probably already mentioned here.
1. Diablo 2
I played diablo 2 for 4 years, the longest i ever played a rpg. Would be nice if you could play it 1 or 2 years and then diablo 3 would be finished.... i hope :D.
2. Baldurs Gate 1 and 2
These are epic!
3. The elder scrolls series
A lot like fallout 3 but with a lot more RPG in it. Also a bigger world and loads more to do/find.
4. Eve online
This is a slow paced space mmorpg that is totaly different then anything out there. End game is huge but it takes atleast 1 year to get there whether you play much or not and then you can still only fly 10% of the ships out there :D.
5. Warhammer online
Best Mmorpg in it's genre/setting, loads of Pvp fun till you get lvl 40 where more PvP fun awaits. Warhammer beats WoW anyday imo. You don't have to kill a single wolf for it's pelt or a rat for it's tails just bash players, siege/defend keeps or objectives and do PvP scenario's.
- The Witcher
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Star Wars: Kinghts of the Old Republic
- Mass Effect
- Torchlight
- Diablo
- Diablo 2
That's all that comes to mind.
You should.
I only found this game like 3-4 years ago and I've replayed it thrice.
It's great, and there's so many options. They could really make good storylines back then.
Just amazing. I couldn't get into it myself at first, but that was probably because I rolled a plain thief and I didn't see the combat options other than realtime. So.
I kept failing and got mad. Took it up again with a necromancer, that was the easiest thing in history, you can go through the whole game with harm.
So I found my balance.. And came to love the game. I've never played a better RPG.
If you want to play a non-cliched RPG as you indicated in the OP then try Vampire: Bloodlines with the Unofficial Fan Patch.
What game are you talking about? You should.

I can recommend Eye of Beholder 1-3, Pool of Radiance, Fallout, Planescape, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Sacrifice, Sacred, Deus Ex, Might and Magic (the actual RPG's), Jade Empire.
Fallout 1/2, Bloodlines, System Shock 2, Arcanum. Disregard every other game mentioned in this thread. This is all the RPG genre has to offer.
