Just wondering if now is a perfect time to buy a new PC i.e. future-proofing. I'm hearing mixed messages like wait for ATI's directX 10 cards and wait for Quad core to take off.

If you need a computer, it's always a good time to buy - however, if you have a decent (or even adequate) machine right now, I'd see if you can hold off for a month or two, since Intel is dropping prices and releasing new chips (including lower-priced quad-core processors) next month. You could also wait for ATI's DirectX 10 return fire if you wish, but that will put you into May.

That's a tough decision whether to buy now or wait. The future always brings new and better systems, but if you wait for them you pay a premium....and 6 months from now your new stuff is yesterdays news. Buy when you have the money and need.

Sure, you could wait for ATI's R600 DX10 cards or for Quad core processors to reach a reasonable price point. But to be honest, when it comes to PCs, there's always that "next big thing" looming on the horizon, because PC tech is always advancing at a rapid pace. And if you keep worrying about what's next, you may find that you never upgrade and stay stuck in the past with an old ghetto PC that's worthless for gaming. If you really need/want a new PC, and you have the money, now is as good a time as any IMO to upgrade.

For a 'super' rig, timing is crucial, but for a decent gaming rig anytime is good enough. :/

There is always a "right" time to buy.
Currently that time is looking like May.

Though PCI-e 2.0 and the new Intel/AMD platforms are going to be out at the end of this year...

I personally plan to buy in April which should last me at least 1.5 years until I need a new GPU.

Intel has a price drop scheduled for some time in Q2 (April I believe). But in general, I would agree that any time is a good time to buy. The alternative is to wait forever since parts will always come down in price and be replaced by better parts.

normally i would say anytimes a good time to buy...but its different this time.  wait until April because 1.) Intel core 2 duo processors are coming down in price and more impotantly 2.) budget dx10 cards are set for realease...save a little cash and have a bomb system.
