Fantasy Wars is pretty good (based on the demo)

Personally though, I am waiting for King's Bounty:The Legend. Its a spiritual successor to the original King's Bounty released like 15 years ago. It should be released later this year, or early 2008.

I do not know if I can meet your requirement for the recency of the titles but I will pass along the titles that I know:

Baldur's Gate I and II established the now defunct Black Isle as a leading developer in the RPG genre.

A the BGI and II graphics engines were used to make Icewind Dale I and II, also two solid RPGs by Black Isle.

From those series spawned Neverwinter Nights One and Two, which fall within your need for the titles to have been released within the last 5 years. NWN defaults to playing out in something between real-time and turns, though you can tailor the autopause options to make it play like a turn-based RPG when you are in combat. Outside of combat the game pretty much always runs in real-time, except when your character detects a trap (if you have that autopause feature enabled).

Fallout One and Two were also two highly regarded RPGs, though I never played either.

Among the things I didn't like about the BG-I / II games was that they were not turn-based in the true meaning; you had to keep hitting space bar constantly to keep your character, and especially his followers, from doing idiotic stuff. I've played NWN-1 and all of its expansions. Same thing, but much easier to control (only one follower at a time). NWN2 started off with a ton of serious problems, the worst of which is named Atari, and the second worst of which is Sony's SecureROM.

Might and Magic 6, 7, and 8 were all switched (under player control) between turn-based and real time. Those were great fun; MM-9 was terrible. I never played Fallout. I have played all of the Elder Scrolls games. I have played all of SSI's Gold Box TSR Rules (pre WoWC changes) AD&D games, and all of the Wizardry games.

You should definately try out Fallout 1 and 2. Easily 2 of the best rpg games I have ever played. They are isometric and completely turn based, and quite possibly have the most freedom in any game I have ever seen. For example, in Fallout 2 you can become a slaver and sell slaves, or you can become a ranger and destroy any slavers you come across. You can become a porn star, a boxing champion, or even a Made Man for a local gang. ;)

Not many for PC.

I'd check out Neverwinter Nights 2. It's a nice mixture of turn based and real time.

I do beleive in the options menu for BG you could have it so the game paused automaticaly after every turn.

The fallout games are a must have, and I found (despite the many bugs) Temple of Elemental Evil to be quite enjoyable.

If you don't mind playing old games, you should get Fallout 1 +2, Baldur's gate 1+2, and/or Heroes of Might and Magic 3. all are very good and turn-based.

The Fallout games normally proceed in real-time, but have turn-based combat. Which, luckily, isn't the crappy JRPG-style turn-based combat, but something more akin to a strategy RPG or X-Com, where you move, attack, use items, etc. depending on how many Action Points you have during your turn. They are definitely must-plays. Also look into Anachronox. It does have the JRPG-style turn-based combat, but the story and dialogue more than make up for that. "I will kill you-with DEATH!" Finally, the mention of Might and Magic brings up memories of those "* of Xeen" games. A bit too old-school for the OP's wants, but now I'm wondering how far the series has progressed. And speaking of other old-school RPG series, I need to get cracking on Ultima and Wizardry. (This may sound weird, but I have not played a game from either series until around maybe three years ago at the earliest-Ultima Underworld I, then a demo of Wizardry 8, and more recently, Ultima IV.)

Silent Storm is a super game. It's a crime that the engine is not used in other games. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait for Jagged Alliance III - apparently JA3 is using the same engine (updated of course).
